Looking to buy a new car

So i am soon to cross the ditch (Australia).
Its really only for uni.
However, id like to have a mode of transport while im there (still in NZ currently).

Ive checked Ebay, and Autotrader and Car Point.

Im really looking to purchase another AE92 Corolla FXGT.
Where the hell are they?
Theres like 1 on each site. (Ive tried GTi also)
And they cost like $5,000 upwards, even $10,000
Thats potty...i was hoping to spend no more than 2 grand.

In fact every single car is damn expensive.
The cheapest VTEC Honda is like 7 gran.

Am i searching through the wrong sites who are full of hopeful idiots

Nope thats how expensive some cars are in aussie. Buy and old Ef Falcon or something since gas will be cheaper there, those old tanks should be plentiful and cheap.

An Old Falcon/Fairmont isnt a bad idea, its like $3000 and for that you get the 5ltr V8. I think that could be a goer.
Couple of Holden 8's really cheap to.

Or you could take a car with you. You are allowed to temp import a car for 12 months without paying the huge import taxes.

Ah anyways, a phone call from my auntie this morning has been a sort of good news i guess. Shes going to to lend me her 2000 Toyota Camry Station wagon. I quick search on google and hey, they dont look to bad and its white. Its a very small takeout fish & chip owners type of car.

afaik, to protect the local holden/ford market over there they put huge amounts of tax on importing of jappaz. last time I checked a 4k gtst over there was around 10k .

Yeah I remember being shocked at the car prices over there for japas. But least they look after there cars over there like I saw plenty of mint ae82s and a few ta22s in mint condition.

the prices are due to stricter import laws and taxing due to the fact that they are manufacturing cars over there (holdens). the taxing is needed to keep them as a prefered option in their market

Look around, or do what I did is buy a cheap normal car and save up.

I still managed to get a EG8 for 3.5k, which isnt bad for aus.

Hate to say it, but forget the Jappas in oz- too bloody expensive- a mate of mine over there killed the engine on his falcon (picked me up from the airport, and be the time we got home it had literally gone through about nine litres of oil), replacement engine? $1100. Replacement XR6 engine with extractors and ECU? $1500.

Go figure...

A guy I knew went over the ditch about six years ago and was seriously considering taking his NZ New GT4 with him... offered it to me for $7k, but was too powerful for me at the time but he would have made at least $12k over there for it (he was the first owner)... man I wish I had that car! lol

Speaking from personal experiance... I ended up buying a shit box 91 ford laser while i was there... however I loved the thing so go figure...

Basically what others have said is right - you can choose any car you want as long as its a ford or a holden...

Holden isn't that bad...

A Camrys appear to be quite cheap or prices normally over there.
My auntie bought hers for $4000, which i thought was quite good for a modern type of car.
