time for turbo rebuild?

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:25 pm

pulled my air filter off today and noticed a bit of oil where it shouldn't be...

the engine is an old shitty bluetop with stuffed rings / headgasket / valve seals etc and a massive amount of blow-by. when the BOV vents it blows as much smoke as a standard car 8)

but even so, should there still be oil in the i/c piping and airfilter? is this likely to be from the front oil seal on the turbo? turbo was supposed to be in mint condition etc when bought...

got a resitctor in your oil feed? if engine has alot of blow by - crank case pressure, it wont be helping much either

its just a 1/4" line tee'd straight off the oil pressure fitting, no restrictor or anything...

oh and this is only after 200km max of driving...

to be honest i'm not sure - i just gave the specs which evil_si posted on here a while back to the guy. i can't measure the ID of the actual line, but the fitting going into the turbo is closer to 0.15"

its braided line and the OD is alot bigger than 1/4"

looking at the state of the cakeed on oil looks like its done a few km's
1/8 or 1/4 is what i use for oil feeds if its a bushed turbo both are normally ok, if its roller bearing it will need a restrictor

hold on, how are your breathers setup? not plumbed straght into the intake are they? feed sounds a bit big to me as well.

i've only got the one factory breather going from the rocker cover to the intake manifold.

i did set up a catch can with a hose which vented under the guard, just to see what difference it made to the amount of smoke coming out. it easily halved it, but there was oil EVERYWHERE under the guard so have since removed the catch can as its cleaner without it for now

edit - just spoke to the guy who set the oil lines up and the hose is 1/4" inside diameter... guessing thats my problem? what should the ID be then?

my guess would be that!!

it recircs oil back into the intake,
is there a check valve in the breather line?

how about making up a temporary oil catch can, clean the turbo inlet and take it for another drive and seeing if the turbo gets oily again. you may have the dreaded oil breathing or the oil is having a hard time making it back to the crankcase. anyways, this should confirm that you don't have a dead turbo...

well i've setup two breathers going to two catch cans. there is next to no smoke coming out the exhaust but quite a bit coming out off the catch-can breathers (only smoke though, not oil).

only done a couple of km and havent had a chance to check the inside of the turbo yet.
