Toyota corolla ll sr 1984

I found this car on trademe, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =140199710
and it looks like it has a 3-au in rwd setup like a Ae85. Is this car a factory RWD?

They are FWD, just run a setup like FWD subarus and some euros.

any theory why they north-southed the engine for fwd? revvy?

Remember skotys dirt track car, thats the same thing. It would of been made for a different market with a lot of excess 3a's i imagine. As time goes on they find them selves all sorts of places.

Yeah its just a really early FWD design, before the E series engine was around. Also it was aimed as a entry level hatch back into the US market, 3AU already had all its legal requriments :) So much cheaper in the short term but they ditched the idea for the next gen and went with the E series for the rest of them.

There are a few 20v ones in the states but I dont think the drivetrain was very strong, so not a very popular conversion.

The latest Corolla 2 EL53 is the same size as the first Corolla KE10 :lol:

quite possibly the answer ,Revvy.
was gonna add that it made it easier to set-up the 4wd Tercel/carib of the same vintage.

Yeah there was a 4wd wagon version of the same shape/era.


My missus had one as a first car,
Horrible to drive, and the gearbox's are one of the worst by toyota.

May be 3A powered, but have about 1/2 the power of a 3A powered AE85.

Alot of the dirty big old american classics are north south facing motors and FWD... go figure..

Audi's are the worst, N/S 5cyl inline, heaps of weight over the front, terrible understeerers. The concept worked fine in the Alfa's, with the N/S front tugging flat 4's though.

The big Yank V8 FWD's were actually quite well regarded for their traction in the snow over a good cold US winter. Still, chassis dynamics were about as important as contracting herpes to the engineers in the States in those days, no doubt.

Mate had a Corolla II SR with a bluetop 4AGE in it, some years ago. Surprised heaps of people.

now that would be a laugh and a half.

i saw one of these rollas a few years ago at a wrecker and was just like, wtf?

Whats the gearbox, and is it used in anything else?

i had one of these years ago and i quite liked it... hard case car with the indistrucable 3A-U. It has nearly the same suspension as the fxgt, even has the adjustable camber in the front, i ran shocks+springs out of a fxgt (are they ae82?) but after i blew the second g/box i gave up and send it to the scrap yard.

they even came out in a sport model with bigger bumpers, side skirts and twin carbs (twin downdraft su looking things)

I heard from an uncle that they made good mid mount conversions in kit cars, along with a similar designed Peugot set up. You just take the whole engine/trans set up and move it to the back.

Alfa's or Audi's? Or both?

Alfa flat 4 engines and transaxles have been used in quite a few kit car things! Good motors too, but I would say that :lol:
