setting up external wastegate port

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:56 pm

going to set up an external wastegate for my 4agte manifold soon. its a pretty standard top-mount steamtube manifold, roughly equal length runners etc.

is there a "best" place to put the wastegate port? does it matter if its off one exhaust port, or is it better coming from two for a more even "vent" ??

will be running around 18psi so needs to vent reasonably freely i guess. would rather find out what not to do now rather than later! :D

cheers

generally right at the collector is the best place, that way its pretty much where you can get it from all 4cylinders.

meh at 18psi it wont need to vent much as it will be closed most of the time to create that boost,

go off the collector, dont go off 1 runner as it will surge,
and doesnt sound or feel very cool at all

I ran 12psi on my old T25g (.80a/r vs normal .48 ) and had no probs. But 18 is gunna be pushing it on the poor old thing.

Im sure the internet will know :)

A friend of mine is running 14psi in his Avenir GT4Z, no other mods, and no problems :)

just had a look at the turbo and the a/r's are .80 on the front and .64 on the exhaust side. those numbers don't mean a hell of a lot to me, but i think smaller = faster spool, bigger = better top end right?

is the issue just going to be getting to 18psi? or the turbo letting go before it gets there? its a genuine garrett turbo.

yer the t25 wil struggle to do 18psi,and if it does do it, it wont last long as the turbo will just get to hot and workin to hard, try get a t28 off a s15 silvia they will do 18 but still pushing it,

it all depends on the condition of the turbo, IMO going by the pics youve got posted it doesnt look the healthiest with all that gunked up residue in the intake.

they are only a small turbo and they die often on the s13's when the boost is cranked up
