Ae86 getting closer?

toyota will never make a car for a small portion of enthusiasts who dont buy new cars.making cars is a business after all. they have to make them for a target market that will buy them.it costs millions in prototyping , machining etc to make new parts etc to prepare for a whole new line of cars.

people who actually have money to buy affordable , slightly sporty cars from new, want good aircon, nice interiors trimmed with something other than plastic right up to the windows, good soundproofing, and minimal intrusion from engine noise. they also like neutral handling cars as opposed to an oversteery balance. a lot of buyers in that market are also women.

the closest current car along those lines i can think of the the Mazda RX-8, and thats not particularly light, but you wouldnt get a car much lighter and retain all the features people want , and all the safety gear required.
even hondas best efforts at reducing weight in their latest type R's havent got them down to the ~1000kg of previous stripped out production cars.

the closest you would get to the ae86 style of car now, would be a 1300-1400kg car with an n/a 1800cc-2000cc engine, but as mentioned that already describes the altezza. maybe an altezza coupe would be an option though?

with the new ranges of engine technology coming through now i wouldnt be suprised to see a 2L turbo diesel (common in euro cars now) or a low pressure 1600cc turbo (new mini etc) fitted to a rwd coupe though.

but there will never be a new one, only a car built on the principals that the original ae86 represented.
small, light, fun, responsive, etc but rwd? maybe not.

but have you ever driven a modern 1300cc or 1500cc? in the right car they are "quick".

I currently drive a Daihatsu Sirion work car, and I have to say that as ugly as they are, they're quite impressive for a 1.3L.
I think the best thing is that you can drive them "hard", and it feels like you're being a renegade badass, but you're still within the boundries of the law

They feel very boaty and rolly at first, but you push them, and it'll get to a point where they'll roll and then just hold. And you're not hitting the bump stops at all, they just firm up. Although thats only at low speeds. Anything above 100kph, and they feel very unstable.

I reckon they should have racing series' with them, but not on fast tracks like Pukekohe, more on the slow, tight courses. I think you'd see a lot of skilled drivers come out the other end, as what you lack in power etc, you compensate with driver skill. Would help to progress to the bigger things. Oh, and could be considered a 'cheap' event to participate in too
Would be funny to watch as well! Seeing these cars with a reputation of being 'nana-mobiles' hoofing it round a track!

thats pretty much how the old kp starlet cup happened in japan.
a lot of the top japanese racers started out in kp starlets.
they were of course the "nana" car of the day

heh, my mrs has a Kia Picanto... 1100cc 57kw of automatic glory...

however, it is one of the most fun cars I've driven, they race them in eastern europe(picanto cup), and at ~$16k new, you can't get much better for the price

Dunno, Clint brought one of the new Daihatsu mini-van type of things to a meet once, looked similar to a Nissan Cube - very funky. I'd rock one as a daily, slammed to the ground on some wide wide 14's

One thing to bear in mind... you can't try and compare the new "AE86" to the old "AE86"... The new one will hopefully be a lightweight FR setup sports car on a relative budget... but basically it should be the same as a corolla only FR...

If you go back to 1983 and then think back another 25 years to what cars Toyota made then, would you really have wanted the AE86 to have been a clone of something 25 years old? When it was designed and made, it was an improvement on the AE70/71. This AE86 doesn't have a basis to improve on as Toyota don't make a lightweight FR coupe... Although the Altezza is close.

I reckon if you could buy an Altezza in 2 door shell, that would basically BE the "new" AE86... 3SGE beams, 6 speed, RWD... perfection

I'll be quite happy with whatever they bring out though as I have faith in Toyota. So long as its FR, inline 4 and has the light weight and handling to make it fun but not stupidly faster or overpowered.

Oh and if it comes out new for under 10k so I can buy one

no c/v issues? no bits of trim falling off? ecu failures? throttle body failures?

Only had 2 throtal bodys thats about it. We have 10+ as loan cars with no trouble too.
