 Such a pessimist revhead.

It did seem like a big mess, but I'm sure it's possible to work with them and make the scene they've created look less cool :P .

Even over since just last year it has gotten worse.
Cruising last year I felt safe with the window down, when you stopped at the lights people would ask what you had done to your car etc etc.
Now if you have the window down some twat yells "f*** you" or "do a skid bro" or in the worst case throws a bottle at you. Almost glad MR2 is broken so I couldn't take it out this year.

it really is a shame to see this sort of behavior tarnish the our interests, its almost as if now, instead of "the minority ruining it for the majority", the tables have turned and it is the "majority ruining it for the minority." How I would love for this to be wrong, but I think this sort of behaviour is pushing some people with half a brain, who have a interest in modified cars, away from it, not wanting to be cast by society into the loser category. Myself, I used to be right into it, cruising town, meeting other people who really were into there cars and having a good time, but now it seems its just full of dipshits who wanna be "badass" and pull phat skids. Unless it is just me getting older, meh, who knows. My two cents anyhow.....

Three things to blame IMO:
1. New Zealands drinking culture
2. The Fast and The Furious
3. Hip Hop

IMO and I'm sort of sorry for this one.. .but complete and utter bollocks.
You're stating people dont have free will. There is nobody to blame but the perpetrators. Personally, I feel if we were to blame something other than the perpetrators then we should be blaming those people in society that give them an excuse. Awwww poor Johnny, his parents didnt love him, he listened to bad music, he watched the wrong types of movies. Poor Johnny needs a good 70's kicking.
Could you just imagine boy racers closing streets in the 70's. The Police would have been out there with Riot gear on, heads cracked. Do you think they would do it again?

It's a well documented phenomenon that people with a higher IQ generally breed less than those with a lower IQ. The result of this is that a large amount of good genes are not being passed on and there is a large increase in genes not up to scratch been passed along.

Experiments in the nature vs. nurture theory have shown significant IQ similarities in monozygotic twins separated at birth and tested throughout their life while adoptive siblings generally have no relation in IQ by the time they are adults.

The increase in this problem of 'boyracers' could possibly be attributed to the fact that in humans, breeding is no longer about desirable traits. In animals, only those with desirable traits for the animals purpose are bred with. (i.e big antlers on deer.) This means all the undesirable traits are eventually bred out of the gene pool. Humans stopped this type of breeding a long time ago and now everyone is breeding with everyone, basically, our species wont evolve much more like this.

It obviously goes far deeper than this but it is a start and gives a general outline of what I mean.

So maybe we shouldn't blame the 'boyracers' but blame their stupid parents for deciding to breed.

could be onto something,Ollie. but i blame KE70 corollas and Gore . half of these 18Y/O drop-kicks were probably conceived in one after their 18Y/O bogan dad and slapper mum found a side road after the diesils in the late '80's, but then these kids never stood a real chance either, after being conceived by 18 Y/O Gorons in a clapped out XA 'Coon after the drags on the Gore-Mataura Highway in the early '70's.
Same could be said for domestic violence in South Auckland, just substitute DX and XA for bikie-block and tinnie-house.

I am not trying to say the perpetrators are not too blame. And I couldn't agree more about them needing a good 70's kicking.
As a metalhead I am obviously against peoples actions being blamed on their music (Marilyn Manson and Columbine for example) I threw the hip hop remark in there to stir the pot a little. Hip Hop doesn't create idiots it just appeals to their simple brains.
And these morons were going to be into something and unfortunately TFATF headed them towards cars (away from skateboarding).
Being a nation of alcoholics doesn't cause the problem it merely adds to it.

My Dad was recently in Singapore and was pleasantly surprised at how happy and safe it is there. However there are many other countries that are also iron fisted dictatorships where that isn't the case.

I'm 34 going on 35, and I was a boy racer when I was 18. The boy racer culture is hardly new, it just evolves with the vehicles and culture of the time. There were hundreds of cars cruising town at night, and I did a number of silly driving things on various backroads, no doubt upsetting people who lived nearby.

What is the difference from 1991-1992 and now?

The stereo's are a bit louder now, and the cars are different. We did our hooning in Mini's, Avengers, Escorts, Cortina's, RX2's, early Civics, still KE70 Corolla's though.

In 10 years time, the current crop of boy racers will be out standing on the front lawn in their dressing gowns, in the suburbs waving their fists at "bloody teenagers" ... forgetting that it's exactly what they were like.... because "it was different then".

Did we get massive police presence when I was young and stupid? Hell no, because realistically most nights in Wellington there were two cars on patrol for the entire Wellington area.

That's so very "Clockwork Orange" of you.

However I'm of the belief that if you arent ever bought into check then you have no boundaries.

I likewise was probably deemed a boy racer. However I never damaged roading surfaces with diesel. Never closed roads with my friends, and never dreamed of throwing bottles at anyone else, especially police. My bet is that if one of those two police cars came to "break up" your interesting activities you didnt give them lip, you didnt throw bottles at them, you just did what they told you respectfully.

And I tore up the roads in my 1ltr KP60, hardly an intimidating device today or in yesteryear.

Does anyone else see similarities with "Soccer hooligans" ??? Is soccer a barbaric sport? No. Do lots of people play and follow it? Yes.

I think that the problem occurs when a majority of people become interested in something and take it too seriously. Everything becomes a manhood test, and if your team looses / car looses then you are the lesser man. Emotions run high and people have fights. Followed by a culture change from a light-hearted common interest, to an all on all manhood war where there are no real allies.

The media has blown it all out of proportion though. That campbell live show last night made no difference, and covered no issues.
