I gather you're turbos are either arent water cooled or you belt the piss out of your car just before stopping it.

My turbo is water cooled - however being a daily driver I need the car to last.

you dont need a turbo timer, they are a pain in the ass, if your watercooled as well, even more of a reason to not have one.

i drive onto airforce base, no matter how hard i've been driving, nana it from the main gate to my place, and just turn it off, speed limit is 30kmh with speedbumps, that is enough. that is an oil cooled only turbo

You don't need a turbo timer! HAHA - that really is quite funny.
Ever seen what happens to the bearings on a turbo that has been just "turned off" after driving, year after year?

Ever seen what happens to oil at 400+ degree's?

not pretty.....

exactly. if you thrash it running 20psi then just turn it off, yeah your an idiot and deserve your turbo to die, but seriously, how many people do that? if your sensible, and it seems you "might" be, i'm sure you dont thrash it then turn it off straight away, chances are you drive sedately just before you turn it off. it doesn't take that long for your shaft speeds to slow down enough, ballbearings will tkae a little longer than journal/bush bearing turbos obviously

It is becoming more comon.

So if you run a 30 to 40mm pipe from the wastegate, right to the back of the car and have it exit at the rear bumper beside the main pipe,

Would you consider that legal or not?

flygt4 wrote:it is slightly off topic, but you seem to be slightly misled on the matter. running a turbotimer really won't make much difference, as has been said, drive gently for the last few km home.

general courteous method for arriving home late in a loud car is as follows:

drive down your street in as high a gear as possible , and if possible roll into your drive in neutral.
if you need to swing your headlights through someones windows to get into your driveway, tip your lights back to park.
park the car and lock up and if possible, use the silent mode on your alarm to avoid chirping loudly.
avoid standing in your driveway talking loudly about "how hot that bird at the bar was" with your mates.

of course some noise is unavoidable, but at least if you try to follow some of the steps above you are likely to have a far happier neighborhood and your neighbors might extend the same courtesy to you , whether they have barking dogs, young children etc etc

Exactly what i do, but i usually drive it nicely from the motorway offramp to my house, about 4min or so, if im feeling paranoid (aka thrashing it around the whenuapai airbase  hehe) ill stop a few blocks away from my house on the main road and idle there then make my way home. But in saying that im usually off boost for the whole motorway run and drive at a nice 90ish kph in 5th. about 2800rpm. Seems to be the best balance of economy and speed for me.

I always dip my lights to park when i turn into my driveway. We have about 5 houses down my right of way. Sometimes i just roll down my driveway.

Turbo will cool down to a reasonable temp in less than 2 min..

And running 30mm or 40mm pipe to the back is pretty cheap and easy to do. Just press bend some 40mm pipe. Wouldn't cost more than $50 for the pipe and free instalation if you did it your self. Much easier than putting a 2.5 or 3" pipe through. Can use the existing exhaust as a mount too.

to be honest i'm unsure whether you would require muffling in that case or not. but i personally havent seen that done yet. im guesing it would require a muffler of some sorts, but the piping does seem to reduce noise as well. that what i was getting at with the ferrari F40 thing, from pics iv seen it looks like they have a separate pipe solely for the wastegates.

What is funny is that you dont appear to understand what a turbo timer does... it simply runs the engine at idle for a couple of minutes to allow the turbo to cool...

Exactly the same is accomplished by driving it off boost for a couple of minutes as you reach home...

I have a turbo timer as well (came with the car - not from factory) and in the evenings i just drive like a nana and turn it off when i stop... bit of consideration for the neighbours is always a good thing.

You're not seriously that blinkered are you?
I have a set of magnets here that align the fuel molecules and increase power expenentially. All yours for low monthly payments.

You continue to run your turbo timer. Its funny though how no vehicle manufacturer or aftermarket ECU manufacturer has put a simple timer into their code, that costs nothing to do, and sold it as a feature of their vehicles/ECU. Perhaps vehicle manufacturers arent as well informed as yourself.

Neither of my two turbocharged race cars will run turbo timers. There is a shit load more to worry about cooling slowly than turbos. I'll run my car down after every race thankyou.

Of course I understand what a turbo timer does :o

I guess I'm a bit paranoid as my car is my baby and I've put more man hours and stumbled across more hurdles than more people would care to poke a stick at.

Answer is simple... They don't need a turbo timer... Neither do you.

Do the planet and your wallet a favour, don't fit one and waste all that petrol idling away

I do know what you mean... my car makes strange noises and rattle and blows smoke every now and again (turbo oil pipe was blocked)... so i treat it with extreme care

the point i was trying to make is that if you are driving at night you can save you neighbours some aggrivation by just driving easy for the last 2-3 minutes of your jorney and then switch off when you stop... it has the same effect as a turbo timer...

They do and it's got no muffler on it either. Like to see the look on the owners face when he get's told he has to fit a muffler to his screamer pipe to make it legal. Come to think of it I'd also like to see the legal bills that would come from the resulting law suit too
