Clutch options

Postby method » Fri Mar 21, 2008 5:56 pm

I had a wee search and couldnt find much.

I think i may have blowen up the clutch. I dropped it in second gear to pull a line lock and the wheels didnt spin but the revs went up
For you omg no street racing, this was at my mates horse farm out near waiuku. We were just playing around. It usually linelocks in second fine. I've had it slip in thrid accidentally before and the clutch was fine after.

Clutch in at the moment is a RPM 4 puck clutch. Not sure on material but it looked ceramic.

Now it just wont hold at all. I can pretty much stop in first gear and the engine will idle with the gears engaged. Its like it suddenly disappeared.
I concluded that it either went pop and exploded or i fully glazed the ceramic real good. Thing is i never smelt burning clutch. Although im not sure if a puck clutch smells like organics do.

Once a puck clutch is $&#$% its $&#$% right? It wont slowly come to like organic ones?

Anyone recommend a clutch for my car? Uses same clutches as toyota levin GZE's.

Here is a pic of the clutch BEFORE i put it in.

Dont want to know what it looks like now :X

you can get them re-lined man, just un-rivit the ceramic bits and replace. will be way cheaper than a whole new kit, but depends if the cover is $&#$% also

Clutch would only have had a couple of thousand k's on it if that.

Who does that? Makes a lot more sense than throwing a good pressure plate and clutch away

I did get that clutch for $317 down from $550 so it wasn't that expensive.

sounds like you glazed it or incinerated the lining.

as escortman said, a puk clutch should feel like its gonna rip the car in half depending on how you let it out

most clutch speciallists can reline them. i know of one place in wgtn where i got mine from but you're a bit far away i guess. they put together a custom kit for my car and modifed the pressure plate for extra bite etc.

Cheers ill get in contact with them

Yeah it felt like it was going to rip the car apart everytime i dropped it. Untill suddenly it didnt feel like it was doing anything.

Just surprised it let so suddenly.
Im not sure why it slipped in the first place, it was only a drop from 5ish k revs in second. usually lights up fine.. but it didnt

so do ceramic clutches right them selves after a while like organic ones?

As i said, this one has probably had less than 1,000 on the clock!

Found something strange, when i went to remove the slave cylinder the little bit that pushes the clutch fork was still quite tight. I unbolted the slave and it looked as if it may have moved the fork forwards 1mm. Was hard to tell but heard the fingers in the clutch moving.

Im sure it wasn't like this when i installed the clutch because i would have had no way of fitting the slave! maybe there was a air bubble that finally found its way out or something :? :? :?
Dont think it could have made such a big difference though, and i did bleed it!

If its an RPM clutch then have a chat to clutch industries in auckland, they supply the PBR and RPM clutches to our work.

In my experience they most certainly don't. With Ceramic I've always ended up coating the ceramic in flywheel and glasing both metal surfaces (IE that of the flywheel on the ceramic and the flywheel itself) A Ceramic should grab harder with slip, unless its damaged.
The answer is Helmholtz!

Well for some weird reason its working again.

Removed the slave and fitted a shorter rod, the clutch wouldn't disengage anymore so i put the old one and and the clutch still wouldnt disengage!
Just before it seemed like the clutch wasn't engaging fully.. now thats weird.

Its the same setting ive been running since i put the clutch in and it worked fine.

So i bled the clutch a lot. Still the same.

Then i adjusted the clutch up at the master cylinder, to give the clutch more throw, now it would finally disengage. Still no clue why this all happened. Maybe a rogue air bubble...

Went for a drive and it was sweet, it makes a slightly different noise, i suspect it is damaged. But it is a 4agze 4puc clutch with a heavy pressure plate only seeing 130odd KW and shit all torque.. so its under $&#$% all load. Im happy it doesn't slip.

Do ceramic puck clutches make a burning smell like the organic ones do?

*cough* i'm sure this puts a bit of load on the clutch.

Oh yeah of course it does. I was talking about normal driving there. Hence it didn't slip.

But it is a tough clutch. People are running the same kind of setup and drifting 200kw setups.

the little cross wasn't there... I don't know why it just wasn't so i couldn't delete the post. Otherwise i would have, I don't like looking like a tard .

It is taking me around 3 minutes to post for some reason, from when i hit the submit button. All other interwebs goes fine..

The one I wrecked that was a puk type, ripped the buttons right out of the plate when going 1st to 2nd during skids warming up the tyres at the drags.
