Nissan Silvia S15 Spec-R opinions - Patiently waiting now...

Postby Steelo » Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:21 pm

Hey all,

Now I know this isn't a Toyota but..........

I am looking to eventually upgrade from to my Bz-r to something with a little more........substance :D

I've tried to find a newer (1997+) and cool Toyota to look at (I wouldn't mind something turbo). Don't get me wrong, I love toyotas..........but they don't make many performance cars that aren't 3.0L e.g supra's... and I don't want to spend everything I have on gas. I wouldn't mind a 2zzge but they didn't put it in anything RWD or cool....

Getting a Toyota would be Ideal because my dad works for Cooke Howlison Toyota here in Dunedin so I get staff rates on all TGP, but I haven't found anything that makes me fizz quite like the S15 Silvia.

This car appeals to me, the SR20det has an excellent reputation (AFAIK?). It's a 2.0L turbo so it won't be to bad on gas if you drive it nice the majority of the time.

Question time.

Has anyone had day to day experience with these cars?

Important: are they reliable? turbo etc.......I wouldn't buy a modded one.

What are they like on gas?

Whats it like to get parts from Nissan? price etc

Anything else I should know?

Cheers in advance......I know there will be some Nissan fiends around here :D

They are quite reliable as long as they've been looked after...havent heard of the cam oil feeds blocking on these yet. Don't kid yourself, after a BZ-R, an S15 will suck gas. They're not bad, but dont expect to match your current fuel bill.
Nissan genuine parts are a bit spendy unless you've got hookups, but given the popularity of them I doubt parts are hard to come by.

Well... my N/A S14 one is absolute shit on gas so I'd hate to think what an SR20DET one would be like

Yeah I realise my 4age runs on stuff all fuel, mind you last tank I got 380kms out of it......WTF??

It will use more gas than my current car........but not as much as a 2jz supra!
If I want better fuel economy there is a non turbo option available.

they changed the oil feed setup on later gen SR engines, possibly around 96. seem to be less prone to problems than the earlier models with the removable pipes.

genuine parts definitely not as reasonable as toyota, we never use genuine parts unless specifically requested by the owner. aftermarket stock replacement stuff is readily available though, for good prices.

dont think you would regret buying one, look so hot with the right set of wheels. people say the 6 speed gearboxes are prone to breakages, but i think thats mainly drifter abuse + increased power. if its staying stock then i dont think you'll have a problem.

regular (5000km) servicing ftw.

Not too many of them for sale down this way...

Do not buy the yellow one with the plate "equipt"

The guy is a munter who has raped the living bejesus out of it.
It's had a recent re-build due to melted pistons, but he still treats it like a paddock car, street drifting, well known to cops etc...

Other than that... they are pretty awesome cars.

Quick, seem reliable from the people I've asked about them. Gas is no worse than any other 2L Turbo, it's all controlled by your right foot.

S15s are quite a nice car, quite chuckable and with just intake, exhaust, boost and a tune you can make a really quick car :D

WTF - the guy who owned it, what was his name? Wasn't something like Hament? I knew a guy years ago that had a silver SiR Civic which he bought the plate "EQUIPT" for years ago but I lost touch with him but he was a pretty mellow driver haha.

Get one, and make it track capable.

Every single one I have seen hit the circuit in a non drift fashion has disappointed me!

I'd love one, have been a fan for many a year... but I don't think my driving is up to RWD turbo standards just yet!

no idea on his name, this guy only bought the Silvia(actually a 200SX) a few months back, not sure on his age, but from his attitude and the looks of his mrs, he cant be much over 18 tops.

Well everyone seems pretty positive about the cars, very reassuring.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't modify the engine......that usually just leads to issues later. That goes for any car usually.

Wheels and suspension just to make it have a sharper appearance. I won't need any more power, remember I'm coming from a blacktop with like no torque.

Keep discussing! this is all good stuff. :D :D

they are a mint car,
my mate has a standard spec r.about 600ksm from a tank driving like a nana, the 6 speed box is allright unless you are drifting, motor will be fine as long as you look after it,they look sexy as,really nice interior and if you did want to mod it parts are a dime a duzin.geniun nissan are well overpriced. eg i think it 1000 buks 4 one headlight.

i would buy one if i had the money.
im lookin at geting a damaged one to fix up.
