Who's bought a de-registered car?

Ok so I'm looking at a GTZ where the owner has let the registration lapse.

What do I need to know?

I assume that you don't/can't do a change of ownership?

What do you do?

i have, but haven't gone through the re-reg process yet. so far ive got a letter from the guy stating I've bought the car, seeing as you can't do a change of ownership.

other than that you need some proof that it was previously registered, I'm not sure exactly what - the original number plates might be enough?

i have but also havent gone through complience yet ,

but ringing around quite a few places gave me the idea that you need a letter from the owner stating that you brought the car and original number plates , but i don'tt think they will be 100% worried about the plates , other than that it just needs to be up to standard and give them some of your money and they should be happy

Ive done it, waste of money. Part the car out and buy one with rego, or reshell it.

Around 400 for your recompliance and 330 for 12 months reg.
If it has the old WOF sticker still on the windscreen, that will have the plate no.
If there is any body damage or rust fix it first or you will have to get a repair cert, another 400
If the figures add up, do it

yeah, basicly if its had ANY structural repair on it before, forget it.
they will want a repair cert for it. good luck getting a repair cert for old work....


if its really tidy and had no damage or issues, then it could be worth it.
but if its had a ding or rust etc it wont be.

Ideally I want to be able to re-register it. The reg has been expired for more than two years and not been on hold.

So basically if it hasn't been in a big stack and in good condition then it's be about $1500 to get it back on the road?

Visit a compliance center, most will give good free advice, including giving you a list of certified repairers, who will normally also give your car a quick once over for free to let you now how much for repairs.
If the car can pass a WOF now and has not had/ need any repairs it will be around 500 to get it all done, reg'd and wof.

you cant just fix it at home and have them ok it.

best thing to do is talk ot the guy who will be re vinning it.

if its had previous repairs they require those repairs to be certed. and you probably wont find anyone willing to cert old repairs... it will have to be redone

As above. Had to chip all the bog out to get a repair cert for previous repairs.
Things like brake pads, brake lines etc all have to be well above wof standard.

you could do.... but it would be easy to just not let the rego lapse!!

I re-vinned my old supra. Probably the exception to the rule because the body was so absolutely immaculate. Otherwise you're usually better off just buying a wof/reg car unless its ridiculously cheap or something...

I replaced all the brake rotors, pads and fluid in the supra. Also replaced all the diff and gearbox oil then took it for its re-vinning stock as a rock.

I think they bounced it on a couple of small things like bulbs etc. But be aware that unless you know what you're doing with the car, it may get bounced on heaps more stuff... suspension arms, bushes, wheel bearings etc.

This was about 3 years ago, but it cost me $450 for the check and another $160 for 6 months rego from memory. So its around $600-$700 to do it (you can choose 6 or 12 months rego when you do it), price may have gone up a little.

Is the car you're getting stupidly cheap and still absolutely mint condition in and out or is there another reason you're considering it?

Most of the cars I've seen on trademe that are de-reg aren't worth buying to put back on the road because people only sell them for a few hundred less than a wof/reg example. So factor in probably at least a grand on the purchase price to put it on the road, assuming theres nothing seriously wrong with it (panel/chassis damage etc).

No so much "above standard" as much as "has the right numbers on it".

We take plenty of bloody good brake pads out of vehicles coming in and you can put $10 Silverline pads in if you want which don't work as well, wear out quicker and fade like mad but are compliable.

(For the record, we don't use those cheap sh*te pads)

last time I checked - a bit over 6 months ago - it was $250 for the revin.

Depends on the age and engine size of the car. I think if it's pre 1990 it's a bit cheaper as it doesn't have to be stripped down so much. Also if it's above 3L or 3.5L (can't remember which) it's more expensive still. I think if it's diesel the price is different again.
