My old mans house also had one when we moved in, one of the best things a garage can have - awesome :)

my house has one in the garage, it was like that when we got here, its a real c**t though because you have to get in then get someone to push the car over you,

so build it as long as your car at least

I'd imagine you'd have to get a geologists report, an engineers report, perhaps something from a historian to say your not going to dig through a site of historical importance, oh and you probally won't be able to build it yourself, i imagine its one of those things the govt doesn't trust the diy'er to do by themselves anymore, so add in the cost of that too. Plus all the normal health & saftey crap, so no one falls down it.
And be prepared for blank looks when you go into the council offices to inquire about it, i don't imagine many of them would know what a pit is, and even less about what their requirements for 1 are, which maybe where the whole thing turns to custard.

Haha.....bring back the good old days. As good old chopper would say, "harden the f@ck up NZ". I'm sick of all the PC BS. If it were me I'd just build one and not tell the council at all. Make sure you build it good or it could collapse and waste you. If the siht hits the fan fill it in and concrete back over the top and no harm done, its not like you build a dodgy house you have to it pull down or something.

BZG - your reply to deaf's was just as much a waste of space.

:? Im glad there are regulations... thankfully the dodgey %&$# that sold us our house is having to fix everything up that was not up to standard... the council are doing really good by us, sure it may cause little issues here and there but these regulations are here to protect the consumer.
