Replacing Toyota CD cartridge/magazine- is it worth it?

Postby Sick Puppy » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:10 pm

I have a 1996 Toyota Curren that used to have a factory stereo with CD stacker. It was missing a stacker cartridge/magazine though, which I was quoted $160+ to replace by HB Toyota. 8O I don't know if it’s relevant, but this is a Pioneer unit made for Toyota, which apparently makes it rare. The service agents for Pioneer in NZ don't want to know- it's Toyota's problem!

Dumping them seemed a bit of a waste, so I boxed it and forgot about it. I ended up upgrading to a Sony CDX-F7710, which is a bit much for the factory speakers… but that’s another issue (and another post!).

Fact is though, I hardly use the car, and was thinking of selling the Sony head unit and going back to the factory set up, which means I need the cartridge, but $160 seems a bit of a rip. So, my questions are:

*Is there anywhere else I can source a replacement cartridge? I looked on the internet, but not had much luck outside Japan (and kanji symbols are a PITA! :P ).

*Is there anywhere I can go to find out whether a standard Pioneer 12 disc cartridge would work?

*Would I be better off sourcing another factory head unit/ stacker combo? They are on Trademe from time to time...

The alternative is to dump it, which as I said seems a bit of a waste, but then I don’t even know if it works! Lol Any help I can get on this is appreciated- cheers!

Why not just buya cheap MP3 headunit, my sister picked up a new panasonic one at harvey normans for $100. Just dump it, who knows how good a 12 year old stacker is going to be condition wise.

For what the Sony will sell for and what it'll cost you to get a cartridge (even standard Pioneers aren't cheap), I wouldn't bother with the effort.

You could always try asking a bored wrecker to find one for you.
