Postby xsspeed » Sun May 04, 2008 2:42 pm

Hey guys, fcuk i piss myself off sometimes,
So i was all set for big day in the garage, ws getting into and bolting up my new clutch cover to the flywheel, was torqing it up, reached 15ft.lbs then i gave a little push for luck and snap. wicked!
the pics show the results.

CRAP!

There it is

But it should look like this

So toyspeed gurus I'm guessing im not the first to snap off a bolt so how should i go about getting it out?

also where should i get a new clutch cover bolt, 12mm AF on the head, 20-21mm long, forgot to measure the diameter. at a guess id say its an M6

Use an 'ezy-out'.
You drill a small hole in the center of the bolt and screw the ezyout into it and turn it until you get the bolt out.
Its like a tapered reverse thread bolt for removing broken off bolts/studs

First try to turn it out with a scriber, the threads are not loaded now so often you can.

From memory it is M8.

gotta luv lazy sundays on TS always get a quick answer. cheers guys ill try with a scribe 1st, didnt think of that, otherwise i'll try an easyout.
im guessing thats an item you purchase, not one you make yourself? if so where do you buy it?

was thinking maybe if i put a blunt bit on my drill and turn it in reverse might work dunno, cheers anywho, will give it a go.

also where do you guys get your bolts from? just hardware shop? or auto shop?

You're guns are too big thats why you keep snapping bolts!

Has happened to me but i managed to get it out with a small flathead. Managed to get enough grip to turn it.

Get mine from waitemata hydraulics, they have all sorts of sizes and grades.
The high tensile ones from placemakers/mite10 would be your best bet if you want one today.

im not gunna lie to you, the thought had crossed my mind! :D

would the best bet be to get 6 new ones, i mean this is a high spec 2e engine here fellas, any unbalance will be disastrous.

maybe a dumb question but how do you get the length of thread to be right? do the cut it in shop? i imagine they wouldnt stock all lengths.

i done the exact same thing a while back, thought they were the high tensile bolts but they weren't. had to use a screw driver to work it out, seeing as there was no pressure/tension on it it came out relatively easily.

might pay to check the rest of your bolts too!

Yeah they have every length imaginable. Just bring a old bolt and they will have something identical.

Mitre10/Placemakers have most sizes but you can only get the high tensile ones in those plastic packs. Cost heaps and you have to buy a pack. But if you want to finish it on a Sunday you dont have much choice!

Should be easy to drill as they will be low tensile bolts. The dowel pins take the clutch torque, not the bolts so they are loaded in tension.

Get 6 new high tensile cap screws of the right length (they will be a standard size). Will cost all of $2. Any engineering supplier will have them.
