Insurance again...sorry guys
I know it's been covered a few times, but I am having trouble getting insurance. I have a clean (relatively, couple or several speeding tickets over the years, nothing recent) driving record, 26yo, 10years on full licence (no claims) but the vehicle in question is fairly extensively modified. I went to my usual insurer and was politely declined on the grounds that the value of the modifications were over 25% of the value of the vehicle ('92 MR2 turbo, mods amounting to 10-15K roughly). So I went to an insurance broker whom I haven't heard back from yet though I expect to. They didn't come across as being particularly positive about the situation, questions like "why would someone spend so much on this vehicle?" were involved (women, they will never understand), despite me giving the insurer the choice of which alarm I install for example. Anyway, has anyone had a positive experience trying to insure a well modified vehicle lately and who with? Should I bother? Has the time come to just take it off the road and use for the track (this would be dissapointing, it is definitely still very comfortable on the road, and I have another car in the works for the track)? I would be happy to accept the risk for what I have spent, is there any way to just get third party insurance (I realise I should have asked this of the broker, but I forgot)?
I apologise for the novel and bringing this up again but I am after a recent experience/opinion.

I vote NAC...and if you can wait a month (not recommend to drive the car around without insurace) till autosalon and go see them there, they may be having another special on where they will give ya 10-20% off if you take out the policy at the show
(they did this at the last show, so they may, or may not do it again....)

I'm 28, full licence for longer then I care to remember.... I have my Starion through AMI, quite a few mods and they know about them all. Only thing is that they wanted to insure it for $1500 cause of the age but went to a car yard and they valued it for A LOT more then that, so took the quote in and now agreed value.... all this including free glass cover, and full no claims bonus for $12 a month.

well all I said the words "turbo all wheel drive" and that I wanted to declare the change of shocks for standard aftermarket replacements, some new springs and some mags to make the car look nice and they instantly pinged me and started charging me more.
1 ticket in 12 years of driving, no accidents and i'm 30 lol...
it doesn't matter anymore how old you are or if you've had a clean insurance record with no claims.
If the car is on the list of "hot vehicles" or the modifications are deemed as "modifications" then they will either decline you or charge you more.
You can work through insurance brokers, pay and get insurance through NAC or not modify your car.
I'll most likely end up putting the car under my business and claiming a work vehicle.

first things first AMI and Tower suck ass.
secondly NAC is all good. on my old ae85 i supplied them with a full page of mods from engine conversion to oil pressure gauge and on the sheet they sant back it had; MODIFICATIONS, as per supplied list, too many to put down here. was only like $350 for 3rd party.
have you tried your bank, i have my surf through westpac now about the same price as NAC

The only thing I dislike about NAC (bar their hideous premiums) is the double excess as Brendon has mentioned...$1500 x2 is pretty brutal!

Aye?!
NAC is good about modifications. Insure the car as standard first and then send in the list of mods after a couple of weeks. My mate did that and it didn't change his premium at all except for adding extra insurance to his wheels.

Some of the quotes I've heard from NAC are hideous, upwards of $1200 p/a for some vehicles. I'm sure they dont mind too much about mods, but they do charge for it.

You pay a excess for every claim you make.
So you have a crash, you pay excess for your car and car you hit. Plus any extras such as under age etc.
They quoted me $1750pa on a 1600na!
Told them its worth 10k and mods are worth 4k too...

Heh, was paying NAC ~1700 a year for full cover on my Starlet. Granted I'm a youngun (20) but do have a spotless 5 year record and the car doesn't see many road K's.
Was stationary at some lights and a woman in a 4x4 in front started reversing to let somebody else park adjacent to her. Didn't look behind, backed right into me. Broke headlights, indicators, dented bonnet and scratched up the paint on the bumper. 8 weeks later NAC were still claiming they had never recieved my claim form despite faxing/emailing/phsically dropping it in. Zero interest in any further communication.
I ended up repairing the lights myself and arranged for the woman at fault to pay for them, worked out to be less than her excess. Needless to say I stopped paying NAC! Now have third party with TIS insurance, $400 from memory with a reasonable excess (for my age)

Just asking the people here that have had bad prem's with NAC...when was that??
I only ask as they were a private company till about a year ago when NZI brought them out, and since then they dropped there prems. Plus also they dropped that crap 2x excess's('s's lol). Now, they will take any mods on a car, and if you wish, they will add it as a seperate policy and then charge you a seperate excess (Ie. $10k car with $1k excess, and $3k mags with $1k excess. So if you had a total loss, you would then make 2 claims, with 2 lots of excess to pay, but you'd still get paid more in the end. $11k as opposed to $9K).
Man I should get paid commission for this
One thing that I can never say enough to people at work though...thrid party is cheap, but are you happy to lose your $10k car with its $7k worth of mods??? (if you have a total loss)

when i was insured was allways through NZI as thats were the folks went, iv only just turned 19 but when i was 16 had 3rd party fire n theft for my ae92 fxgt, i told them had magz worth 500 and sounds for about 1000 didnt change my excess and only payed just over 200 P/A, when a stupid nissan driver crashed into it, NZI was real good because the other guy was on restricted after 10 so he wasnt covered luckily i had a uninsured drivers clause, so they ended up paying out 2500 when i payed 1000 for it hahah and bought it back for 160 buks
