What tyre size/brand for ride quality

Hey all,

My 94 SSII Celica is currently on 215/40/17" Dunlop Direzzas (DZ101?). Anyway, the tyres are worn out and it's time to replace them.

The car is a bit bumpy on potholes for me, so I'd like to get tyres which reduce this effect a bit.

I was planning on going to 215/45s - is there any reason I shouldn't do this? (Other than the fact it will change my speedo a bit).

Also, between tyres of the same size/profile, is there much difference in ride comfort/quality? If so, what are good tyres to go for (up to $300 ea) for the best ride quality?

To be honest going from 215/40 to 215/45 is going to make an unmeasurable difference in ride quality.

Try choosing a tyre with a soft sidewall as opposed to a firm sidewall. Trouble is the soft sidewall tyres are usually the cheap and nasty low quality brands.

Not much you can do just by changing tyres, other than changing diameter of the rims (ie going to 15 or 16") or changing the suspension (shocks, springs etc).

I beg to differ.
I went from 205/40 to 205/45 and that improved substantially the ride quality (and made speedo slightly more accurate).

I went from 215/40 to 215/45 and the difference in ride quality was definately improved.

same here.

16" 205 40 to 45 profile change made huge difference on ride quality in my RunX.

heh, was cheaper too :)

yeah my car was much nicer after switching back to 185 60 14 after a spell with 185 55 14s

Thanks for the responses guys. So presuming I don't want to change my rims and don't care about the speedo, changing to 45s seems like a good move.

So having decided that, any suggestions on make/model of tyres to get? (up to $300/corner new & fitted). (Beurepairs do the DZ101 in a 215/45/17 for $220 ea).

goodyear Eagle F1s are all I use now, theres probably a few top options out there nowadays, I think Eagle F1s are considered better than Direzzas and my last tyres only cost $180 a corner, so 220 seems a bit steep to me. My tyres don't last a huge amount of kms but thats probably down to the soft compound (grips damn well) and my driving behaviour :oops:

F1s are on the way out the new F1 will be a asymetrical tyre simalar to the potenza adrenalin.

Depending on the vehicle , but generally the sport maxx is quiter 8)
Assymetric is the way everything is going now , quiter , smoother , performance starts from 0 upwards , better cornering and longer lasting life span for the tyre , hence why for the change 8)

and as for eddie would - changing to 45 series will make the ride more comfortable , just check that it isnt going to foul on the guards or inner arches at all as it is 20 mm overall rolling diameter larger 8)
As for tyre brands to suit , what sort of driving are you doing , and what do you want out of the tyre ? at 300 per corner you can generally have most tyres that you would like 8)

The car had 45s on it when I first got it - so fingers crossed they'll be fine.

As per my driving: I don't do any track days or anything like that. Just for driving around town/suburbs/highway.

The main things I'd like out of the tyre are:

1. Ride comfort
2. Resistance to 'tram lining' or bump steer
3. Quiet

I'm less concerned about performance and durability.
