I love them for getting to the moutains for snowboarding, towing a boat, throwing dirt bikes or anything else on the tray, shooting, 4wd'ing etc...
They're fine as long as they are being used for what they were built for, I think charging for big private vehicles in the central cities is a good idea. Too bad many of them are probably 'company' cars.

ive got a big prado rental at the moment (not by choice) driving auck - tauranga - Hawkes bay. I hate it... its so big and clumsy, napier taupo road will be fun..

i've experimented with going 110km and 95km and found via time taken and proven by the satnav that you actually get there quicker by going at a steady rate and slightly slower the whole way. simple case of tortoise and the hare.
average speed over 5 hours from wgtn to taranaki was around 83km/hr travelling at 95 km/hr on all open road sections. bear in mind this includes all 50/70km zones as well.
average speed trying to keep at 110km/hr over the same journey was ~78km/hr.
the reason for this is if you're going 110km you might pass everything in sight to start with but eventually youre going to run up the buttocks of a campervan/bus/truck and be stuck behind them at 65-70km until you get a clean pass. if you drive consistently at a sligtly slower speed you won't catch the slower vehicles as quick and maintain a higher average speed.

the additional advantage is increased fuel economy from 12.5km/l travelling at 110km to 14.5km/l travelling at 95km.
to be honest i'm just not in that much of a rush to get where i'm going, so it doesnt bother me.
