open road speed limit change coming?

Transit have been building all state highways with a 120kph design speed for decades, recently this changed to only SH1 requiring 120kph design speed. I doubt they would let this go to waste (billions of $$ waste) by dropping open speed limit to 90.

However, with one of the objectives being cutting the road deaths in half by 2040 it is possible the limits on a lot of the poorer roads will be cut back.

I love them for getting to the moutains for snowboarding, towing a boat, throwing dirt bikes or anything else on the tray, shooting, 4wd'ing etc...

They're fine as long as they are being used for what they were built for, I think charging for big private vehicles in the central cities is a good idea. Too bad many of them are probably 'company' cars.

Well yeah the limits 110, but everybody sits just under 120, usually more etc. I try not to speed tho.

I was thinking about crappy roads other day, if they would pave every main road with stuff they use on motorways I speculate that the fuel saving would be more that 1.4%. Just think about it the rough crap that is on state highway, how much more fuel is wasted because of increased friction and noise and every bump is also waste of fuel.

Agreed. Every time you have to slow down to 30k then back up to 100k can't be good for the environment. Especially if you're like me and as soon as that 100k sign is there it's full noise in second.

Yep.. Driven mums Prado a few times.. Its kinda cool at first, yeah mean huge car get out my way ho. But then its like.. Damn this is stupid.

if i'm travelling on the open road for long distances then i'll usually go ~95km the whole way.

i've experimented with going 110km and 95km and found via time taken and proven by the satnav that you actually get there quicker by going at a steady rate and slightly slower the whole way. simple case of tortoise and the hare.

average speed over 5 hours from wgtn to taranaki was around 83km/hr travelling at 95 km/hr on all open road sections. bear in mind this includes all 50/70km zones as well.
average speed trying to keep at 110km/hr over the same journey was ~78km/hr.
the reason for this is if you're going 110km you might pass everything in sight to start with but eventually youre going to run up the ass of a campervan/bus/truck and be stuck behind them at 65-70km until you get a clean pass. if you drive consistently at a sligtly slower speed you won't catch the slower vehicles as quick and maintain a higher average speed.
I found a lot of vehicles passed me only for me to catch up to them 2 hours later and arrive at the next major city at the same time.

the additional advantage is increased fuel economy from 12.5km/l travelling at 110km to 14.5km/l travelling at 95km.

to be honest i'm just not in that much of a rush to get where i'm going, so it doesnt bother me.

Totally agree with this.. you speed up, waste fuel in the process of speeding up, then get stuck behind a slow fag. maintaining a consistent speed usually gets you to your destination in roughly same time, and helps your $1.95 last longer

Hehe, that reminds me of my drive to uni. It's about 45kms each way and from my house it is 100kmhr until the last 10kms. There are a set of traffic lights where the speed drops to 60 and everyday I get overtaken by the same people who are going quite fast, usually at least 120 in Ford Explorers etc. Everytime I get to the traffic lights, I see every single car that overtook me about 30kms back and by the time I get to the lights they have been sitting there for a while and trigger them to go green so I just slow right down and roll up behind them while they take off. I then usually overtake them in the 60 km area just for added lols.

That really doesn't make huge amounts of sense now I read over it but you get the idea.

The design speed depends on the speed environment the highway is being put in. Places like the planes around ngatea are designed higher than 120kph where as the speed through say waihi gorge or the kaimais is more like 80kph slowing to 60kph in places.

And motorways are designed higher than 120kph too.

The new(ish) Dunedin to Mosgiel motorway extn(long stretch mostly straight, down hill) was designed for 180km/h... funnily enough, quite a few plonkers have been done for doing that speed down it.

I'm over in Oz at the mo and their open road speed limit is 110km on a lot of it. We've just drived from adelaide to 6 hours north of Brisbane so I went throught a lot of areas that had been raised rather than lowwered.
