I had a 3 inch downpipe off the turbo, into a 2.5 inch exhaust that headed straight to a hks cannon muffler, off boost and cruising around, it was quiet as, until someone decided to stick their foot in it and rip it off the mounts putting big holes in it, could only afford to replace it with an rps item at the time, now its significantly louder... :x

Moral is, I had an exhaust system barely a metre long into a quality muffler and it had all of the performance and about a 1/4 of the noise.
even if I manage to get another decent muffler, I still think it will fail a wof just because it looks like a loud exhaust...

I have a gutted downpipe into a 3" exhaust, with 2 reso's and a muffler, 4.5" tip and mines damn quiet considering the exhaust is only just over a metre long.

In my SW I had 3" downpipe into 3" muffler into a 3" shiny bling cannon and it was quiet as 8O The centre muffler I used was only about 200mm long, but wasnt straight through.

my car is not legal, tested it today at work, 117db at 4k without silencer, 104db at abotu 3500 with silencer

88 at idle with silencer, without at idle is 102, inside the car at 3500 is 92db without the silencer. but i know for a fact when cruising it is quieter.

being around my car at 117db for more than 30sec causes permanent hearing damage, and at 88 after about 2-3hrs will cause permanent hearing damage

so from this, i'm going to try modify the silencer to quieten it down even more without restricting it too much.

LOL. Im gonna have lots of fun trying to get wof this month for the mr2.

"A vehicle is not fitted with an exhaust system that includes a means of sound reduction"

3" downpipe, 3" piping, straight out the back (no muffler) ... Quieter than a 20v with rps fitted trueno tho :P

Would a turbo count as a method for reducing noise? They certainly do make a difference.

whats the difference between the grey and red ones?

I think the grey ones are louvered resonators, they quiten the noise down a bit better than the red ones I think

Exhaust gasses merge into a collector (Pipe) pass through the turbine assembly, reducing the noise and then on to atmosphere. I would hate to argue the point with a cop or a VTNZ tester but it seems to me like it fits.

I actually think that this is all a good thing, I'm keen on exhaust's having to be quieter than 95dB, hell, anything above 85(common bus noise) is pretty damn loud to be next to, it's certainly loud enough that you can't even yell over the top of it.

I tested about 50 cars at two motorsport events, using a dba meter, and as near as possible to the "quick test" method in the book. One car was over (Group A Legacy), two cars were on the limit. All three were f@cking loud.

My standard Sti came in at a whopping 84 as I recall.

Hey Leon what did did you use to test them? I'd be keen to see what my trueno is like. I specifically went out to set it up to flow well but be quiet.

The silencer is the main thing, 2.5" straight through but still quiet as possible. Its an "Ultraflow" from memory, just plain black/stealth  8)

I only just had it wof'd so mustn't have been in effect yet because it was never mentioned. Have also just had the wastegate plumbed into the downpipe aswell so hopefully im sorted.

Jeezuz Brendon, that puts my 107dB without Silencer to shame haha.
I just passed with a 97dB with the silencer in.

They still have the 2dB allowance for cars with the engine in the right place dont they? 8)
