From what I recall the color of the plates is noted with LTNZ. Ill have to find the original paperwork for my red ones.

Do a tidy job and im sure it will be fine. If they pick up on it simply get new black ones!

The most sought-after combinations available as personalised plates (such as "A1" or "AAAAAA") became special "collector plates", with lettering in blue on white. These plates sometimes change hands for large sums of money.

Currently, prospective buyers can order a personalised set of plates as normal black-and-white plates, as red plates (red font on white background), as "lifestyle plates" (with a picture), as "Europlate plates" (European style and dimensions), or as message plates (with a small message above and/or below the license number).

Number plates are covered in a special reflective film. This means when a picture gets taken of them from a speed camera they light up like daylight weather it be day or night.

I remember my old man and his mates peeling off the reflective coating and repainting the letters in black so that speed cameras dont ping them on there motorcycles. But they still looked legit.

So i know for a fact cops will have a cry if u paint ur numberplates and its obvious.

Paint the whole thing gloss black, let it dry and sand down the numbers/letters. Old school plates

So it doesn't cost much to replace? just say your original pplate got knicked, modify one, keep the other for safe measure as mentioned above.

lol I don't need to modify my plates for the old school look, well actually most of the black has peeled off them so I guess I do.

Nah bugger all, I think conventional plates are $20 odd. No reason at all why you couldnt get a spare set made up if that was your thing.

You must use the official registration number plates issued when you register your vehicle.

14 Form of registration plates and licences

* (1) The Minister may from time to time, by notice in the Gazette,—
o (a) Prescribe the form and colour of registration plates and licences, the size, shape, and character of the letters, numbers, or distinguishing marks to be shown on them, and the means to be adopted to make the plates and licences easily visible:

You will find that in past issues of the Gazette there have been dictated colour schemes for License Plates, essentially they will say that as of date X the license plate will have colourscheme y.

So if your rego post-dates X then your colourscheme must be y. You can't make your plate adhere to the Pre-X standard when you should be at the Post-X standard as per the Gazetted notice per the above law entry.

Also section 17 states that you can be fined up to $500 if you display a plate which is not displayed 'in the manner outlined by the Manner prescribed by section 14'. The 'form' of the plate is prescribed by the Minister and this literally means, 'what it looks like'. If you change its appearance you're in breach, as the appearance the plate ships with is prescribed under law.

For your information, I have provided the legislation on Registration Plates:

Transport (Vehicle Registration and Licensing) Notice 1995: Section 2. Form of registration plates (other than personalised registration plates or trade plates)—

(1) This clause applies to a registration plate other than a personalised registration plate or trade plate.

(2) The distinguishing marks on a registration plate shall be—

(a) Embossed, and coloured aluminium on a black background; or

(b) Embossed, and coloured black against a reflective background consisting of white retro-reflective sheeting,—

and the base material of a registration plate shall be aluminium.

Going by that you are allowed to change new ones to black background with aluminium numbers/letters as far as I can see?

I read it as you can either have the old black plates or the new white plates, you cannot modify what you have (legally).
IE can't modify white ones to look like black ones, or vice versa.

in that letter he was asking specifically about powdercoating new plates black and sanding back the letters, and the reply did not specifically say that he couldnt do that so i read it as being legal as

Reread what I posted... if you change the 'form' of the plate to one other than what was gazetted (which is noted by date!) then you're in breach of the law.

This is a 'rice' change to make anyway..
