I remember reading someone on here (i think) that you can have the silencer in so long as you can't remove without tools. I.e. a screw would be sufficient

Passed a WOF with a removable silencer in my 3" exhaust in my evo. Held in place by a single screw. I had to stuff around adding steel wool as well as the silencer didn't make that much difference.

It comes down to the inspector's interpretation of 'not easily modifyable' or whatever the exact words are

flange with a 1inch hole in it bolt it in, close to muffler, be hard to see, dont thrash it,

and then when you drive around on street just use silencer without that flange, and take silencer out for racing

This is the way I would do it

Put a restricter between a flange. Cant tell and easy fit and remove.

Would a restrictor even work?
Effectively its an orifice plate right, so you are getting a massive pressure drop across it, creating turbulent air, and high velocity through the reduced area, all of which equals vibration and sound?

If you are spending most of your time on the road and sometimes on track then I would suggest
1) silencer
2) New exhaust system, either dual as you have said or different/better mufflers.

obviously 1) is cheaper, and as you have a silencer I would just use that for now. Just go to a WOF'er that will allow it.

I don't even have a silencer in the caldina, my garage guy wof's it without batting an eye.
Its loud, def louder than factory, but I wouldn't think it was 95dB

I use a removable resrictor plate on my swift GTi. This is bolted in just past the engine, this does work.[ all be it on a 1300cc twin cam ]

well, went in to get a warrant/green sticker removal, had the silencer welded in so there was no doubt into it being easily removed.. No longer good enough apparantly... If i was going to go to that much effort to make my car noisy, I'd un do the 3 bolts at the downpipe

Icing on the cake was the $90 it cost to get tested in the first place ..




aand, to top it all off, Ive have been referred to the lvv certifier for my 'extensivley modified engine'


on that list was my exhaust (fair enough)
ecu
intercooler piping (wtf)
aaand larger turbo (wtf again)

since when did a $&#$% 'ct20b' need to be certed for a gen3 3s engine?

The ECU needs to be certified, but the I/C piping????

As for the larger turbo, some people have no idea what they are talking about, give them a little power and the run riot

Since way back, even adding an electronic boost controller used to require a cert, but nobody really checks unless they're being pedantic.

LVV certification is always required for the fitting of a supercharger or turbocharger as a modification, or the substitution of a turbo or waste-gate, or the re-chipping of electronic engine control units on turbo cars.

Hmmm wonder if it could be argued that replacing the ECU isn't rechipping

Ive been taking my car there for warrants since I got it over 3 years ago,
Its had the straight through exhaust since I got it, and its passed 2 warrants already in its current state, no mention of ecu, turbo, intercooler or exhaust. Its political $&#$% bullshit..

Sooner that shebeast loses power the better.

a simple short length of tube, the same size as the exhaust. connected to the last muffler makes a big difference to noise. rather than just dumping into a bling bling 4" tip. witch pretty much makes the last muffler pointless.

exactly my thought, now neil fraser has done ALOT of modified cars, and i'm sure if it was necessary he would have it listed on my cert.

as for the turbo, if you have a spare ct26 take that in, and show him how stupidly big a standard ct26 off a 3sgte is

I got stung for having an 'aftermarket intercooler' on my evo1 which was completely bog standard. LTSA are morons.

I'm due for a WOF at the beginning of next week, and virtually have a straight through 3.0" exhaust, to a 4"-4.5" muffler, it's going to be fun trying to pass the WOF with that, considering it doesn't have a silencer. :-/

just picked up a factory exhaust system. Have to go to the Toyota dealer so I can get a note to take back to the wof guys to show it is a factory turbo. then to argue the fact of the ecu, what will my best way to go about it be?

I had a quick chat with the cert guy today, he said that since aftermarket ecus can increase the power of the car that it needs to be certified, so im $&#$% either way
