Calling all AE111 owners....

Postby Crampy » Mon Jul 14, 2008 3:08 pm

Just want to confirm some things about AE111 gearboxes.
Can owners please state what car they own, eg: Levin, Trueno, BZ-G, BZ-V or BZ-R etc...
Then the gearbox code as stated on the VIN plate, eg: C56-**A, C56-**C or C160.... etc.

Also, whether or not it has superstrut suspension.

Cheers.

Worthwhile asking if they are superstrut or not to confirm if they in fact did come with lsd

Now this is what I'm wanting to know. Are you able to confirm whether the car has an LSD or not?

well when i jack the front up and turn 1 wheel the other doesnt turn. But that doesnt mean it isnt lsd as ive been told, it all depends on what lsd it is. So what kind of lsd are they supposd to have? viscous, heclical, plate?....im guessing it isnt plate.

park a wheel on grass, the other on the road and try take off fast. easy way to tell. LSD to take off, non-LSD you spin the wheel on grass

Trueno - pritty sure its a bzg. ( chassie# BCMZF )
C56 04C - Pritty sure it is lsd to
And it is superstrut...But not for long.

Wikipedia:

C56
A 5-Speed Manual Transmission for FWD cars.

Gear ratios for this transmission.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Reverse Final
3.166 1.904 1.392 1.031 0.815 3.250 4.312

C160
A 6-Speed Manual Transmission for FWD cars including a optional limited slip differential.

Gear ratios for this transmission.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th Reverse Final
3.166 2.050 1.481 1.166 0.916 0.815 3.250 4.529

Maybe that helps a little bit?

Now, the problem with that is the type of diff they have will not always act as a normal LSD. They aren't plate diffs, they're torsen or viscous or something. Apparently they need a certina amount of load on them before they apply drive to the other wheel. I might do a search to find out more on them.

So, far it's looking like the superstrut's are onto a winner with the LSD. Anyone else with a AE111?

Any BZ Touring wagons? What's the gearbox code on them, compared to a BZ-R Levin?

Doesnt that only work with certain LSDs? Im pretty sure my SW20 wont do that with one on both surfaces, but it will always spin both on tarmac. And it definately came with an LSD standard.

Mines Non-superstrut BZ-G
Factory had NO LSD

I have since put a superstrut gearbox in it which IS LSD, easiest way i found to tell is drive at 50km/h in 4th, if it sits just on or slightly over 2000rpm its LSD, if it sits well over more like 2200 - 2300 rpm its Non-LSD, the LSD boxes have a different final drive. Thats was the giveaway when i put the new box in my car, well besides the 2 black lines i left on the workshop floor :P

Long story short ALL non superstrut ones I personally have seen have been non LSD, all superstrut ones i have seen have had LSD and the bigger twin-pot brakes

Also the whole one wheel on grass thing, from what i understand these are viscous LSDs from the factory, they work as a normal LSD when both wheels are on the same surface, when they are not they work as an open diff (eg. Grass and Tarmac or Tarmac and Gravel)

I hope this helps?

If anybody knows any different please let me know, ide hate to be giving out incorrect info

So, would I be correct in assuming that out of all the C160 (6 speed) cars, the BZ-R levin is the only one with LSD as standard? My mate is picking up a 6 spped BZ Touring wagon tomorrow (well we are. Road trip!!!)
I'll check the number on it to confirm if LSD or not.

Are they?
Geez man, it seems you'd be changing gear more than actually driving, with a 6 speed
