Whatever happened to rwd Corona coupes?

Postby RunningRich » Thu Jul 17, 2008 11:25 pm

Apart from the obvious answer - rust!

Was having a discussion with a mate at work about the cars that have completely disappeared from our roads. I'm thinking back to some of the early jap imports that arrived in the late 80's (I'm showing my age) such as the Mitsi Mirage turbos and the likes of the 1980 Nissan Sylvia.

One Toyota that has disappeared is the 1984ish rwd Corona Coupe. Here is the funny thing, I've spent the last hour trying to google a picture to show him cause he can't remember them. Can't find a single pic. Nada. The wikipedia Corona entry lists a 2 door coupe for the early 80's but doesn't mention it further. Wikipedia is very sparse on the early 80's cars.

I remember test driving a Mitsi Galant (Elantra ?) coupe in 1992, think it was an 81. 3 spd auto with a 2 litre turbo. It was shite. And the yard price was $6000! 8O How things have changed.

I just help convert one of these to 3SGE, and am doing a 3SGTE conversion in another.

I see a lot of them, most of my mates own them haha (all 4 of them)

Had the Soarer type dumped in our old street about 10 years ago, has a 3T or something, with fancy chrome intakes.
you could see right through to the other side coz of the rust

Hah! Just realised I tried every search term I could think of apart from "Corona Coupe" Putting a year or chassis type in prevented it from finding a damn thing.

I can't think of the last time I saw something like that in Auckland.

Think you're meaning an Eterna Coupe - the Elantra was a Hyundai model. I have a 1980 Eterna GSR Turbo Coupe in 5spd manual, pretty much mechanically identical to an early Starion Turbo. I guess 3spd auto would let it down, my manual one is not too bad.
