Strange Happenings In The Sump...

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:02 pm

...Of A 4AGE:

Any idea what these would be?
Looks strangely like a piston ring, or a crank bearing.
I pulled a sump off a 16v 4age on the weekend and found them. It was a stock bluetop 4age, but running a t25 turbo. Engine ran mint until it was pulled out, apart from alot of smoke. No noises, knocks etc.

Luckily they're too big to fit through the sump pickup

Ring lands, compression rings and other bits of piston by the look of things.

Large chunks of aluminium at the top left and bottom right are ring lands, steel pieces are bits of compression ring.

the bigger chucks on the lower left look alot softer, similar to alloy all mashed up.
the bigger piece just right of the centre is about the size of a 5c coin, and of solid material.

Couldn't find anything to put in for scale! Would piston rings even make their way to the sump? I would've thought they'd get stuck in the bores or something?

They will make their way to the sump quite easily, especially if there are chunks of piston missing.

Toyotas are good, mate rooted his 3s (you will know him little devil) and his engine had a very slight tick. Pulled the crank out and his bearings are fuxed.

It was!! Took the car on a 50km trip last time I drove it and it just blew smoke. Ran 7psi fine all the way to the limiter. No misses, flat spots, noises, bangs, nothing; just smoke!
Should be safe to say the smoke isn't from my turbo anyway

The engine is still complete, would be interesting to either a). put it back in and see how long it lasts or b). pull it to bits and see what happened. problem is, its not my engine :?

Trls250s - who's that you're talking about? Don't know off the top of my head

Just put a project thread up if anyway wants to have a gawk and comment:
