What box?

Postby TRD_ZERO » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:56 pm

OK my engine is almost ready to go in but now i need to sort my box out again. Its a 20v turbo. Now ive currently have a c56 box in there and its lsd but the 2nd and 3rd syncros arnt all that flash. Should i stick with the c56 and get it freshened up or got get a e58? The e58 will have a better lsd and will be a stronger box, but the ive already got a c56 and it has a lsd not a great one but one non the less and it has better ratios. Im not planning on producing mega power but im scared the power i do make it too much for the c56. engine specs: blactop head 8.9:1 pistons tdo5hr (evo 6) turbo. any advice appreciated

if you don't drive it like a muppet, the existing box should be fine... also, if you put "normal" tyres on it, it'll fry tyres before it'll break things.

That engine combo will produce in excess of 200kw at the wheels no problems. It depends what you're going to use the car for, street, track, combination. Maybe a stink at the drag strip.

If you'll be taking it to the track, or enjoy "spirited driving", I'd go for the E series to be sure it wont break.

Otherwise, use the C56 until it dies. That way you'll have time to search for an E series box (getting a bit harder to find now).

There is a reason why Toyota put the heavier box in the GTZ.

If your C56 was in tip top order, then you might have a dilemna but given that you need to spend money to 'freshen' it, why not put that money toward the E series box with the knowledge that it will do the job.

If the car is to be used for any sort of motorsport, rememeber that the biggest cost of competing is usually logistics.
Why would you incur the cost of preparing for, and travelling to, an event without a car that you're confident will last the distance?

The money you plan on spending in freshen up together with the amount you could likely sell the LSD box for should go a long way to buying the heavier gear.

Thats a very good point, and if you were at the level where you had or were wanting sponsorship they'd want to see results, not DNF's.

Go E series, then its one less hassle.

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar

OMG so shiny!

To back up my response, c56 should handle around 200kW from what I have researched. Obviously if you are creating a track weapon sure go for e-series, but for a streeter or daily id say stay with c56 especially seeing you have lsd, drive it well (i.e. dont crash gears).

Problem as noted with e-series is the ratios, c56 seem sto have the best ratios when meted to 4age's.

If you are planning to make serious power I would go down the route that Bazda has using a e series box with modified gears to give the better ratios. Not sure if he matched c56 ratios or used c56 gears? I can't remember.

Oh and e series weighs >>>> c series

Yeah i was thinking of getting the e series for peice of mind. But i could end up buying one that isnt all that good then ill have to get it freshened up anyway cause you cant tell what condition they are in when they arnt on the car. It will just be my weekend driver as ill have a daily i dont really have plans to take it to the strip or track. I had a front wheel dohca (mazda) that had the bpt (1800 turbo) motor in it and i was using my 1600 turbo box on it(fwd) and that went well for a few years. Just a similar type senario. So it looks like ill have to get the e series one then damit! lsd c56 up forsale soon then.
