Soarer questions.

Postby mr_monkey » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:10 pm

Possible to make the cruise control work past 108kph? wtf is that shit.

Anyone seen stock weights for the cars and what can be removed? eg weight of sound proofing etc.

what supra parts are interchangeable with the z30?

Are dodgey fuel senders/gauge common? mine seems to have a mind of its own.

My boot was wet inside this afternoon. Is there a common leakage spot there for water?

What chassis code should I have if there is an LSD in my car? i cant decide if its open or factory LSD.

Some soarers came with a sub? was this in the middle of the rear parcel tray? (is there a spot there where i can install one- using boot as the enclosure)

AND.. I have no internal lighting from the middle centre celling assembly. Just opened it up and it had one random bulb sitting there which didnt have a hope of working... and i have absolutely no idea how the three compartments actually hold any sort of bulb. I cannot even see positive and negative terminals! just htat spring steel loop which is rivited to that sheetmetal base thing. so strange. Anyone know how this shit works?

Thanks all!

Most parts other than body should be interchangeable with equivalent year supra. So on a JZZ30 (which I assume you're talking about?) then subframes, crossmembers, brakes, axles, struts, drive shafts, gearboxes, pedalboxes, engines, radiators(?) etc should all be interchangeable.

Wiring, panel, glass, interior for the most part won't be, I believe front seats are the exception.

Think of Supras and Soarers as brother and sister that aren't twins... the supra is the lift back ugly brother that is a howick whore... the soarer is the sexy, sultry, curvy sister that looks infinitely better and is sophisticated and smooth but still has a bit of a bite :)

I'd imagine if the boot is wet you have a) rust hole under boot seal rubber, b) rust hole around spoiler mount hole. Theoretically these would be the only places water could get into the boot.

I believe the fuel senders/gauge are commonly faulty, I believe theres a writeup on one of the australian lexus forums about fixing it.

http://www.planetsoarer.com/ is your new bible/best friend. Do lots of reading :)

The axle code for an LSD differential (assuming it hasn't been swapped) should end in a B.

I believe on a JZZ30 it should read A02B. But its quite difficult to decipher modern "a" series codes. Just know that the last letter, a = open diff, b = lsd. All LSD's should be Torsen afaik.

Some soarers did come with a factory sub in the centre of the parcel tray. Sheet metal should all be the same but the parcel tray itself won't have the hole. Also an open air sub will probably perform like ass and the fuel tank is directly under the parcel tray.

Thats about all the help I can offer, I'm still prefering to stick to the real Soarer's but I'm sure one day I'll have a tinker with the newer whales ;)

 Good luck
mr_monkey wrote:what supra parts are interchangeable with the z30?
Most suspension parts, with a few catches. And seats. Ignoring of course JZ related bits.
mr_monkey wrote:Are dodgey fuel senders/gauge common? mine seems to have a mind of its own.

http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/51/265.html Although will only help if you have a GTTL from memory, the pov pack JZZ30 uses a run of the mill float level.
mr_monkey wrote:My boot was wet inside this afternoon. Is there a common leakage spot there for water?

Seals for the spoiler can go, usually notice it more if the car is parked up hill. Anywhere in particular there was water??
mr_monkey wrote:What chassis code should I have if there is an LSD in my car? i cant decide if its open or factory LSD.

A02B
mr_monkey wrote:Some soarers came with a sub? was this in the middle of the rear parcel tray? (is there a spot there where i can install one- using boot as the enclosure)

Yup, don't bother, any decent sub won't fit because the magnet won't have enough clearance.

There should be three bulbs, one for each of the buttons, and the door light. Pretty sure they're wedge bulbs, will take some pics when I can be bothered.

wow thanks tons.

All of this has answered all of the little niggly questions that I've had. These links are great! I also found a list of supra/soarer compatible parts.

That 108kph limit removal link is ultra awesome. My question was semi tonge in cheek. Did not think the fix would actually exist!

Actually not htat much heaver than the mk4 supras from everything ive read so far. Will find out when it goes on the scales but it seems that 1560 is the weight of the poverty spec 1j cars.

I'll loose 30kg just from going to supra seats!!!! and hope to get it below 1500kg by removing a few silly things like sound proofing.

Its too cold to go back out to the car again- and the pics i took came out blury... but OMFG. Looks like I need to add the interior light assembly to my WTB list.

Mine has had the tabs behind each bulb (that provide the second contact) snapped off... left and right just have the loop and middle just has the front one.

WHY WOULD SOMEBODY DO THIS.

Because Soarer's are like Mk3's.....They hate their owners

Just an idea how much space there is for the sub

Cheers. I think I might still give it a go- maybe raise the 12" up on a spacer plate or something.

I don't know. I'm talking shit.

Have you run a sub in the boot and had it sound any good in the cabin? its a long way away!

Adding a sub isn't really going to help this cause.

The difference in weight that a sub will make to a Z30, is like giving a 140kg woman a handbag made of carbon fibre or not. :P

Have you seen the door hinges? 8O

They look to weigh about half of my whole car, right there.

You might find it's similar to others around the same era (JZA80 etc) but the later model Soarer's are different so I wouldn't hold my breath

on the gttl, the front drivers seat is 35kg, passenger is 25kg. back seat is another 16kg. carpet about 5kg. single exhaust can save 15kg over a twin muffler one. spare wheel is about 20-25kg. my car was 1600kg standard. the base model is 1540- 1560kg and has no ABS , no sunroof and no TEMS suspension. removing air con and putting battery in boot helps the weight distribution.

Man, you folk are awesome!

Ive read a few DIY's on fixing/rebuilding the door hinges with sintered bushes - think i'll buy a spare set of hinges and give that a go (i've replaced/machined a few bronze bushes over the past year 8O )

Question.

When you remove the aircon pump is it as simple as fitting a shorter belt?
