Clutches

Postby samlloyd » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:45 pm

The other day i managed to destroy an exedy 5puck, so im in the mids of replacing it.

Ive got the old clutch and box out. Just working on getting these flywheel bolts out with limited time/skill

Rb30det, with a 30box. Push type? Im not sure, i dont know anything about this sorta stuff.

Im looking at twin plates, dont want to spend over 1500.

Anyone recommend where to go, and good clutches/dealers

Unless you got power tools, don't bother trying to undo the flywheel bolts. Last time I tried, I slipped and busted my finger open
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

You don't need power tools to undo bolts, what you need is a good 6 point socket and a power bar, also I made a plate that locks the flywheel in place (using the starter ring teeth).

Sergei: Mine was stuck on so nicely, I asked a mechanic friend to help me, he bought a compressor and a rattle gun, the rattle gun just sat there rattling for about 30sec+, with the trigger on/off/on/off, then a few of those bolts finally came loose.

You shouldnt need a twin plate.

You can get a rb30 clutch with massive LBS. The exedy ones arent that high in the lbs area. People buy them cos its exedy lol.

Get a standard pressure plate, take it to Auto Clutch (ring and arrange it then send to them). They will beable to get the standard one up to maximum clamp force for the power you want and they will also suggest a clutch plate to use.

2nd that auto clutch is the only place to go for performance clutches.

kW? Surprised the gearbox is holding up if so, is it just a standard rb30e box?

Yes to all the above. Im getting new bearings and replacing syncros in it aswell. My gearbox man reckons it will be ample. Same gearset as terrano's.

And i did email autoclutch. Seem like real good fullas, told me heaps more then i asked with a few options.
Performance Cover Part No Ref N-015 X uprated to approx 4000lbs Clamp

Performance Disc Part No Ref AC240CK with Dampened Hub and steelbacked Carbon Kevlar Friction Material

OR
f you intend to go drifting we would suggest a 5 Puck Full Ceramic Disc with either Dampened Hub or Rigid

(removed pricing from quote but very competitive!)

is 4000lbs pretty decent?

Quite often a bar can get stuff off that a rattle gun cant. You just gotta lock the flywheel up, which is what lever bars, rings gears and one bellhousing bolt are for

yeah i suggest you don't start the motor with your foot on the clutch, or it'll be bye bye thrust bearings.. i run 3200 lb single plate on my car with 240kw and it's holding up well..

A trick I have used one or twice is a short piece of chain,
bellhousing bolt through one link, and bolt another to the nearest pressure plate bolt hole,

But make sure you use a decent lenght bolt through the flywheel to not damage the threads.
