running 4agte before tune

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon Jul 28, 2008 10:10 pm

I'm nearly ready to get my 4agte running and tuned. Problem is I've never had the 4agze block running prior to setting it up; so before taking the day off work, trailering the car to tauranga and getting it on the dyno I want to make sure everything is operating as it should ... without damaging the engine!

Its a 4agze block with 8.0:1 compression (hasn't been rebuilt at this stage), T25 turbo, 550cc injectors with a Link G3 ecu.
The Link has a tune borrowed off a 4agte which was running tdo4/365cc injectors.

Anyone got some suggestions on how to go about this without causing serious damage? I don't need to take it on a 30km trip obviously, just warm it up then up the road and back. Obviously being tuned for 365cc injectors but running 550cc injectors it will be running rich. Is this a good thing or should I adjust the master injector cycle at all?

Any advice would be good.

Cheers
-Matt

definitely start it before taking it to the dyno! If it was me I would start it, check for leaks etc and take it for a short drive.
Don't rev it out and you should be fine.
Just try not to let it idle to long if its running rich as it will foul the plugs pretty quick

the factory maps use to be a good starting point
definatly run it up, drive it etc, dont go hard on boost or rev it right out and you should be fine,

double check everything, drive it and get it hot etc,
you wont cause any serious damage if you dont rev / boost it hard.

idle time will kill spark plugs by running to rich

make sure you can drive it, that the coling system is working properly i had huge head aches with this as long as you stay off the boost will be fine, when last did the engine run? what state was it in then? new oil plugs water etc i'm sure

when i start a fresh motor, start it and and run it at a high idle (3000rpm) for about 10mins making sure theres oil press, no fluid leaks, cooling system works, check timing and then drive it for a little bit, id do the same with yours to if u havnt run it before

spark plugs will be fine - will put a new set of them in before tuning anyway.

i've already had the whole setup - bar the ze block and 550cc injectors - running before using a bluetop block + 365cc injectors and the tune on the link was well drivable.
as a side note - I assume the damage done to the engine (seen in the other thread) came from "experimenting" with the setup on the bluetop ecu and ze injectors prior to installing the link

engine was last test run in japan before being imported here and has been sitting in the garage waiting to make its way into the car for the last couple of years  haven't done a rebuild on it yet but all yes fluids, plugs, gaskets, seals etc.

one other thing - is the o2 sensor really required for running the engine once tuned?

cheers for the info guys :D

no. not required for tuning either as the tuner should bung his own o2 sensor up the exhaust. they use a wideband o2 which is far more accurate than the standard one.

got the engine running on friday, runs alot smoother on the 550cc injectors than 365cc, no major smoke or anything (apart from running rich), just need to suss a waterleak still.

one other question in regards to tuning, do tuners require the factory knock sensor to be fitted when dyno tuning the engine? the ze one was in the way when I fitted the rwd waterlines so i took it out ... :?

Most tuners will fit there own knock sensors when they tune, shouldnt be to much of a drama

will they fit it in place of the original one though? as my waterlines are covering that thread, or can they fit one anywhere on the block, within reason?
