About a year ago I had a few people in the car which resulted in muddy car mats. So I took them out a cleaned them the next day.

All the mats turned out clean and fresh smelling except for the drivers mat. It reeks and it was the least muddy. I haven't put it back in the car since and have jus dug it up again and suprise, it still smells.
I've tried scrubbing it again, using that smelly carpet stuff you vaccum up all to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of the smell?

Try vanilla essence.
Chucked some of that in a REALLY smelly fridge we were cleaning out at work (was used to store fish bait and other stinky stuff). Came out smelling nice.

outside, spray them with cold water, then tip some hot water and clothes wash powerder on them, scrub with srubbing brush for a bit, rinse by spraying again, hang to drip dry

tada, works for me have washed some pretty rank smelling carpets that way come out mint everytime

If it's bacteria causing the smell, try chucking the mat in a freezer overnight, kills the smelly little sods.

Rank food = better than a smelly car. Specially if you drive it to work etc. You spend far more time in your car than in your fridge/eating.

The idea is you mix up a little bleach with plenty of water and then soak the mat in it, then rinse thouroughly... as you would normally use bleach really, shouldn't create spots.

Put it through the washing machine then leave in the sun to dry.

Unless you live in Auckland, we don't get sunlight here.

pretty sure freezing doesnt kill bacteria just stops them muliplying (as much) while they are frozen.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'll give them a go during the week and weekend.

Just for the record I tried rinsing with water then scrubbing the hell out of it with hot soapy water (washing powder) then rinsed it off and let dry. I tried this method twice with no result. This was last year mind you, so I might give another try.

Kill bacteria with methanol.

fill up the bath tub, pour lots of dettol in, washing powder, vanilla essence, and every fkn thing u can think of and wash it. Let it sit there for like a week.

Gets rid of smelly shit
