What year is the import car cutoff?

I'm looking, more like perusing, to own a TVR Cerbera. I hadnt realized that if you can prove it is a low volume manufacutre you can get it exempt from frontal impact regulations. As such handn't investigated importing one before. Problem is they made about 3 of them post 2003 (which I think is the cutoff)
If the cutoff date is indeed 2003, is there a penalty for bringing in one before said date? Or is it a case of you simply cant get it registered (given no motorsport or home build exemption)

Current cut off date is related to emissions, eg Japanese cars chassis no. must start GF8 or later

And I would say get approval before it leaves whichever country it is coming from. Most people involved in compliance of imports are quite helpful unless you are trying something dodgey or just plain aren't listening to their advice

stay the hell away from them for the moment unless you can get one with a statement of compliance with it. TVR having gone tits up, means you can't get a statement of compliance for the other several dozen standards that need to be proved. Special Interest Vehicle gets you out of frontal impact, and emissions. Nothing else.

OK, just looked at the special interest vehicle page.

What about the GT-FOUR RC? It could, arguably, fit three of the four prerequisites:

1. the vehicle’s make and model has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less - only 5000 ever made.

2.the vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a two-door coupe or a convertible - 2 door coupe.

3. the vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a high-performance vehicle. - I dont know what you would count as "high-performance" but it wasnt bad for its time.

What do you reckon?

You're only allowed to import it if its the Speed 12.


And if you let me drive it.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

There is a second being built in the UK at the moment from one of the race car chassis and bodywork. I would be keen on getting a set of body panels taken off it and modify the Cerbera chassis to suit the hangers! Now that would turn an eye or seventeen.

Unfortunately a common end to Cerbera's (although that sort of looks like a Tuscan). Generally the fire starts in the passengers foot well. So one of the first things I'll be doing is heat shielding the inside of the footwell. Second thing I'll do is fit a massive extinguisher!!

Weird that its limited to coupes or convertibles. Some regulator thought that hatchbacks weren't ever going to be an important addition to NZ's roading fleet.
