That should be ok...my 3" system had a small (roughly 250mm long) centre muffler and a shiny ass bling cannon on the back and it was quiet as.

My exhaust was 3 inch downpipe into 2.5 inch exhaust that went straight to the back left corner into a cannon muffler/resonator.

It originally was an hks item, which was rather quiet considering, but a small exhaust leak caused many backfires and burnt it right out, as well as someone ripping it off the mounts.
So I had to replace it with an RPS unit which was all I could afford at the time.

that was the system I had on that got me the green sticker.
So I tacked in a silencer/baffle for the first recheck and that still failed. Now the exhaust is factory from the downpipe back.
They even hummed and ha'ad about the fricken downpipe, so I nutted at them at how would it affect the sound...

You'll probably need a cert to switch to 98 RON fuel soon due to the power increase....

havibng just been thru this debarkle of " noisy exhaust " i can tell how to do it on a St205

But a few things pre 98 cars like mine have to sit under 95 decibels on load and idle back ..

I scraped in after a few adjustments to a full 3" hks system , to get 94.5 decibels ..

VTNZ was the ponly place able to remove green stickers ,- AA had NFI at all at their testing stations ..

There are only a few certifiers in Auckland that can " pass and certify the car " - not every exhaust place are able to do this ..
they can do a quick test - which is just a noise test to see if its legal or not - or a full cerification , which is ALOT more money and takes at least 4 days to organise as the equipment to do this has to be sent from wellington. Pass either of these - according to what your vehicle should be making , and your home free

the re WOF costs 90 bucks - which is basically a fee for the use of a razor and an excuse for the WOF guy to go Vroom vroom ..

If anyone needs help on this ill try to assist from what i know via PM.

I was just reading about this on the LVVTA website yesterday. It said "any modification that is likely to increase power by 20% or more" needs to be certed. Not sure how they decide on that though. Are you supposed to take dyno sheets? Or is it just 20% more than the factory output?

I'm going to take my car for a warrant tomorrow and have been pissing around all week fixing up litle bits and pieces so it will pass. The last thing I have to do is find my silencer. F*ck knows where it is though I've pulled the garage apart twice in the last couple of days.

Anyway last time I went for a warrant the man said it was borderline too loud. That warrant I had to go get some small cracks in the chassis welded and come back for a recheck. He just said to have a silencer in for the recheck. He also said to burn the outside of it a bit so it went purple and looked like it was welded in .

My system is a factory downpipe/cat (not sure if it's been gutted or not), 3" pipe with one resonator through to a largish cannon.

*edit* silencer found. yesssss :D

For me, even that is not clear enough, are they talking torque or HP?
If HP, then I have a 2001 Altezza, which from factory they are meant to be 210HP.

Mine has been dyno'd at 168HP, so I can increase 42HP before I get to the stock reading, hell, I could damn near throw on a low boost turbo*, and as long as I keep it under 252HP, I shouldn't need a cert

*havent looked at other rules on this, but can't recall any specifically saying if you slap a turbo on it must be certed.

and just to keep it ontopic, the turbo would probably keep the exhaust quieter too... which after looking after my 3 month old niece, I am definitly in favour of anything that'll keep her asleep.

Funnily enough, that's exactly what the rules say. If you add a turbo, it's automatically requiring a cert.

You got 168HP at the engine? or at the wheels, I'd bet a half eaten cookie time factory figures are at the engine not at the wheels.

ROFL @ turbo comment too

Ive got one of these, and it is absolutly brilliant. Ok, it may not be quite legal, but the rule is it must not be cabin adjustable. So mine is hooked into the ecu, only opens over a certain rpm and TPS, ie high power.

I'll dress it up a bit for the next WOF, hide to motor and wires a bit, or just unplug it, then its not cabin adjustable.

I have a 3" mandrel bent exhaust with a small resonator, which was ok when it was turbo, but the car is now NA, last wof with a muffler it was 106db, put a cat in it and the dude tested saw 102 on the meter, thought it was reading wrong, so changed the sensitivity on the meter and passed it as 76.

The Varex is so quiet, you cant actually hear the car running from behind at idle, there is almost no sound, and i can drive on the motorway/openroad and hear the radio.

I think they fall into a bit of a grey area for Wof, depends where you go.

because its like having one of those silly silencers that can be removed.
Your exhaust is still able to be excessively loud.

Im running Dual 7" Diameter Adrenalin R 3" in\out mufflers on the MR2 in a Y configuration no resonators or anything. They are a straight through cannon style muffler with no baffles.

Noise wise its near factory level, just slightly more throaty but certainly not a raspy fart cannon noise.

Id reccomend you give the guys at Adrenaline R (City Steel and Engineering) in Hastings a call.

From what I have read on those adjustable exhausts. They must still pass the noise tests (92dB?) with it on its loudest setting (fully open setting).

The varex is actually alot quitier than your normal canon style muffler even when full open.

They are MUCH bigger than the normal canon style and ALOT heavier. They have way better packing inside to dampen the noise.
But if your planning on running say a 3" system with no resonators or anything this will not pass when fully open.

But these would really appeal to people who want to be able to turn the sound down when driving to and from the track.
