Some vehicles may exceed the 90-decibel limit with the original manufacturer’s exhaust. The proposal would require these vehicles to be modified to a condition that is quieter than the original exhaust. Comments are sought on whether such vehicles should be permitted to be fitted with an original exhaust system or equivalent, with proof of suitability required.

Thats pretty $&#$% up ah?

Sound pretty logical to me. Why should they be allowed to be louder than the law?

Why should the law in NZ be tougher than anywhere else in the world???

AFAIK, currently there is nowhere else in the world that requires such a low level in a standing test. Manufacturers all use the drive by ISO standards. I can't see LTSA indroducing a drive by testing facility so will that mean an end to importing any performance vehicles???

I would doubt that many performance vehicles would even be able to get their induction and mechanical output below that level , let alone the exhaust.

Maybe pop back to 2003 when LTSA existed and ask?

Did you spot the bit that mentioned all the international driveby standards?

Also, I did the quick test on something like 65 race cars at a couple of events we ran back in April / May.

Guess how many outright failed at 95dba?

One. Yes. One was louder than 95 using the right meter and testing procedure. It was a Group A Legacy rally car.

Maybe because NZ seems to have a higher modified car percentage, therefore higher ratio of pissed off people (due to excessive exhaust noise). Laws are about winning votes, higer percentages are better. Joe blogs in NZ will see this and think - good, another rule to make cars quieter, won't care about the details.

It cant be all that bad.

It just means there is more of a challenge to make a performance car a quite performance car, something I think is bloody brilliant.

People like you have cost me $1000 of custom fabrication to get my 3.5" exhaust under 95dBA, without killing performance. I have no time for these new laws and my submission is all done.

People who actually care about motorsport should make submissions as quickly as possible to see if we can get this draft changed. I cannot understand why the people in power can't tackle the problem (under 21's with modified cars).

I would love to see a restriction like the P plate in Australia, limiting drivers under a certain age and driving experience to low powered and unmodified cars!

nice generalisation there... but while we're generalising...

People like you have made a good excuse to push through laws like this, 95dB is f'ing loud, and no street going car(barring road going rally car maybe, or just buy a trailer and tow car) should have a reason to be anywhere near it.

Consider the piss to be well and truly taken with all my comments.

P plate idea is well worth pushing though.

dba limit on MotorSport NZ cars is (and always has been) 95dba

Nearly every motorsport car I tested complies with the quick test anyway, because I borrowed a test meter, and tested all the cars at a couple of our car club events.

As far as I read and as far as the VIRM and the local Cert guy reads a motorsport car is a car that has a cage/seat/belts and authority card. For a motorsport car to pass a WOF at 95 it would have to be cert'd for the motorsport/exhaust side of things.

I don't know your situation, but i'm guessing your car is modified which is why its loud? Harden up and accept responsibility for your own actions. Passing the buck on to someone that thinks cars don't have to be loud to be fast is pretty 'LOL' really.

OK so a couple of months ago I spent a couple of hundred dollars on getting my wastegate plumbed back into the downpipe. I was sick of it anyway, and it was only like that for ease of installation.

Before that, I did some research into quiet performance mufflers, so my GTZ is reasonably quiet (i'd be very surprised if its over 95db anyway!). I prefer it like that.

But now Im worried Im going to have to chuck away the $300 BOV which is just a basic one with no trumpets or anything. And will only annoy people if I was a tard (note: Im not) and drove like an idiot TRYING to make noise in suburb's or what have you.

What worries me is that I could end up having to chuck this BOV away and get a plumb in one and hope it works as well as this one. More money that I have to spend on something that is already legal/certified.

So I can't help but feel like I've gone out of my way to have the vehicle I wanted while complying the guide lines. But now I'm being squeezed for more.

Annoying yeah?

Maybe I should stop paying rates or something. Take THAT "system"!

If it is loud, chuck a filter over it and see if it quietens it down. Thus, you have a "silenced" BOV, and meet the rule.

yeah it is pretty loud, which surprised me when I fitted it since I specifically didn't get one with a trumpet.

Im fine with that idea 8)

The worst part is, while you might now be saying "yeah BOV's are gay and loud, and big exhausts dont need to be loud" is that these sorts of laws tend to end up being followed by more and more restrictive laws and our freedom to modify cars at all ends up being totally taken away.

The problem I have, in general, is just pointless rules for the sake of rules.

Does it not piss anyone off that we are having the CHOICE taken away from us. Freedom of choice is being eroded all the time, of course some rules are justified, they're needed to keep order, but stuff like this, amongst other things, is just BS

Sure there are eggs out there who are going to do stoopid stuff and ruin it for everyone, but it really irks me that my CHOICE to do what I want is gone. Even if I chose not to do something, atleast I made that decision, not someone else.

Yet another pointless rule eroding my freedom of choice. Thanks government, you bunch of c*#@ts.

No, it isn't.

It is because there is political pressure to shut cars up.

Pointless rule would be making all cars orange in colour.
