AE85 rust

Postby IKE86 » Wed Sep 03, 2008 2:15 pm

Ive found the inside my doors theres a bit of rust  dont know wether its worth trying to fix beacuse its right at the bottom on the inside and really hard to get at and im not really into fixing rust as i dont really have a clue as to what im doing. so would it just be easier to get new doors?
Or any cheap panelbeaters in tga?

that last photo makes me cringe :? anything is fixable, but a "cheap" fix will not end up saving you anything.

I'd attack all the rust with a grinder with wire wheel etc and see how deep it goes

obviously water has pooled at some point, is it your daily? might wanna check your rubbers.

if its your daily and you need it done quick I would say get it looked at by a panel beater.

If its a project car, try find a wire brush that fits to the end of a power drill that will be able to get right into the door skin. Then I'd wire brush that sucker to see how far the rust goes through.

Following that rust dissolver (a lot of it), sand, dissolver again spray it with fishoil, wipe it down, prime and paint.

If you have full penetration rust you will either be looking at getting plates welded = $, or getting new doors = $

Would be worth getting a quote before you shell out for new doors though

ill give that a go and hope it hasnt gone through. will it be easier to just pull the door off?
And yea it is the rubber on the window has popped right out leaving a huge gap

Gutted, yeah could be a mish getting in there. A worthwhile mod could be to slot or drill some points in the bottom of the door. That way it wont act like a bucket.

See what you can do with the door still attached, it might give you a better anchor when grinding the rust off than having it just propped up on something. If you need the door to go wider just pop the door stopper thing out.

If I remember correctly, there was a guy on Trademe selling fibreglass doors... and they weren't too badly priced...

Perhaps look into this option?

Otherwise, yeah as everyones said... need to strip it back to see how bad it is, if theres enough clean solid metal to work with of if its plate welding time...

Strip the entire door down and get it dipped then repaired, primed and painted.

Or on the cheap, wire wheel + bog + spray cans.

2 cans of fish oil and rust kill, one for each door. Treat it now and u will get about 3 months out of it before u should start to see a reappearance.

By then u should have saved enough cash to get it repaired.

new doors arent crazy money considering everything else off the damn things seems to be worth its weight in gold.

paid $150 for a drivers door in mint nick from tama autos

fibreglass doors alot of hassle for a streeter, as they are just skins - no winding windows etc
