Harness ?

Postby kim0663 » Thu Sep 04, 2008 6:39 pm

I was reading through the lvvta website http://www.lvvta.org.nz/
as i need a cert for my coilovers and half cage thing.

Now, i just came across that harnesses are illegal on street cars unless i have an authority card.

I like having the harness there for use in the occasional track days but hell, would I need to rip it out if i want to pass the certification process?[/i]

Yup no go with the belts. And even if you have an authority card, pretty sure you have to have them tied back when not competing, but someone will confirm that
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

Nope

You must have harnesses if you have a full cage, half cage you can use the factory lapbelt I belive.

Id install the eyelets for the harnesses and just put them in when required.

I didnt think you could get a cert for cages.. well I couldnt anyhow.

As far as I know you can have full cage and harness, but needs to be homologated, you need an authority card...

From memory you also need to prove you do a certain number of trackdays/events to keep your card?

I don't have a cage at all but still use a harness for track days is this legal or not because I've done at 20 track-days with this current set-up and have'nt been pulled up once????

My harness is certed, but I have no cage, and I can't use the harness on the road. So I don't really know what the point of it being certed is, but oh well.

Yes. If it is solely contained behind the rearmost seating position, and each seat has an effective head restraint. So, if you have no back seats, and you can't bash your brains out against the half cage from the front seat.

This is not legal for the road, without a MotorSport Authority Card (which you could get easily.

It is acceptable to use a harness at MotorSport events without roll protection.

[wasn't quite sure which avenue of "legal" you were aiming at]

Theoretically, it isn't possible to cert a harness through LVVTA so far as I am aware, unless you're running a Lotus 7 type kit car. Which isn't the same as saying that some LVV certifiers haven't certified a harness :) Don't know how it would stand up in court though.

It is however possible to "cert" it through a MotorSport Authority Card, and have it legal to use on the road.

(LVV cert is permanent, and done through LVV inspector. MotorSport Authority Card is done through motorsport NZ, is attached to a competition licence record, and is annually renewed).

Are you allowed full harness belts at a motorsport event
when used with a normal seat with a headrest,
rather than a seat with the holes fro the belts to come through?

Yep, if your seat has a head rest, and the belts are resting on your shoulders rather than on the seat (which would obviously be bad).

Don't have the rule book on me, but there are vague wordings in that direction in there.

I used my AE92 with a harness, and standard seat before I put the cage in it. Was an improvement, but not as good as a race seat.
