In america, or so I've heard, you can turn right so long as it's safe, pity it doesn't apply here, but I guess it would just caus more problems.

^ here that would be interpreted as if you own a SUV you can turn right, to hell with safety and to hell with everyone else. As for truck drivers and bus drivers (I've had to take evasive action to avoid a red light running bus before) ring or email the company they work for and lay a complaint. You will find they will take it seriously as the last thing any company needs is for one of their trucks/buses to end up on the news after it runs a red and kills a dozen people.

Had a big white spot in my eyes for about 20 mins from it, but damn it was worth it. There needs to be more cameras, that would help the problem a bit.

Its the only way to stop them running it (or at least think before doing it)

I also hate people who slam their brakes on at green lights! Nearly hit one today in my mates ute with the RC behind. They were trying to turn right on a road you couldnt turn right on...

Definitely brake if possible (almost been hit by a ute hauling ass behind me).

I always check the rear view mirror now when it goes orange (while braking) - if i think i am going to be hit and i can see no movement in front of me i continue through - otherwise i always stop.

Yep same as Canada. Also in Winnipeg and its -20 and a few feet of snow about, you can't stop for a red, no problem just keep going :)

Turning right onto Gt. South from Greenlane Road coming from the motorway at nigt = almost everytime. The phasing always f**ks out there, I wait ages first and make sure there's noone coming though.
Tip for successfull rally driving: Don't sink you're car in the first pond to catch your eye.

I've noticed them ever since I started driving however it is getting worse and worse. Started off with a few offenders and now everyone else thinks its ok to do cause thats how stupid people are in NZ

Was thinking about this today then realised I'm retarded. They can turn right because they drive on the right hand side of the road. Took me that long to click. But it's not so different here as a lot of intersections have shoulders for turning left that are just governed by a give way sign.

Agreed, I swear that this year must be the worst for red light runners, either that or I just notice them more, but I see at least 3 a day at the moment i reckon

If i needed a bit of panel beating done and saw that a BMW or similar was about to run a red light and i was going to get the next green and i took off as it turned green (Urban light have 4sec amber and usually 2 - 3 seconds, depending on size of intersection, of all red before the next phase gets the green) and he hit me would i get free panel beating or cash for my POS car??

Not sure its worth the risk :P You're supposed to check the way is clear before entering an intersection. In a perfect world you could drive straight into them and get fixed :P But we like to protect the criminals, so you would likely get charged with dangerous driving not the red light runner.

Only do it if you can prove you had no where else to go and so had to hit them imo :P

Legally yes he/she would have to pay out for your damages - he was in the wrong, I've been tempted to do it MANY times. I'm sure they wouldn't take the risk again right?!!

I reckon, with the amount of camera phones, a campaign 'dob in an amber/ red light runner' is in order.

I could easily snap half a dozen every morning on my walk down hobson st, and get the red light in the photo.

Thread more aimed at those who run the red after it has just turned, just to get through :)

I really like that idea. Often its hard to get your phone ready in time, but the idea is good.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

faaar at paknsave in mt albert people run the red then have to stop in the middle of the intersection cause its jammed inside the carpark. you can tell cause they enter the intersection while my light is green. i rev, drop clutch, lay on the horn and drive straight at them. then stop at the very last min. am i a rager? only when i have to deal with that crap every time i get to that intersection (every day)
