No Compression

Postby eskimo » Tue Sep 16, 2008 9:28 am

Hi,

Unrelated Toyota question. But my daily driver(99 hp11 primera, sr20de) didnt want to start yesterday am.

towed it to the mechanics workshop and he said it no compression :( . The car was running perfectly normal the night befor and does not use any oil or lost any water doesnt smoke or any thing.

Any way got the car running and its been sweet today and has normal compression.

Any idea's. Ive actually sold the car and the guys picking it up tonight I just dont want the dam thing to come back bite me in the arse.

Cheers

the later P11 & U14 SR engine usually run big ends, they dont have oil squirters onto the cams like the earlier ones do.

I know what can cause that sympton after someone has done engine work on them but if its been driving then just turned off, it cant just mysteriously develop it. Very odd

Yea, its odd alright. Drove it all day sunday. Parked it in the garage went drive it to work yesterday and wouldnt start.

Starts & drives fine now. Mechanic thinks it could have been the lifters, but is also puzled.

Just hope it doesnt happen tonight when the new owner comes to pick it up.

Cheers

If it happens again, few squirts of oil down each spark plug hole and take it for a drive it until the smoke goes away (100m-ish). Have had a few do it, bit of oil get compression back up and they usually go first pop. Not sure what sticks, but they're always good as gold after.

I have come across that a few times with sr20s, sr18s cranking and sounding like its thrown a cam belt and no compression (yes I know they are chain drive). Weve had the same issues with later Jaguars also, but as suggested above, pull the plugs and squirt oil down the bores, cough and splutter, then they kick into life eventually.

it seems to be more common problem with the nissans when they have been flooded or have sat around for days on end.

if u selling it, write up as is where contact, say good by make sure its hot when they pick it up.
see them at work from time to time, i've had to put my boot into crank it for 1min to get them going. no longer or u will flooded engine with fuel if plugs arean't already dripping. and will damage the starter.

sounds like bore wash. common on VQ engines but I guess SR's could do it too.

it's gonna be hard to diagnose unless it does it regularly though.

here's something to do,

locate the igniter or ign coil wiring, ( not the ht lead )
unplug it and try to start the car.

see if you get the same sound.

you will be amazed how many cars sound like they have no compression when they have but just have no spark.
