Nice, that old 4wd box looks like it weighs a ton. Time for a 2JZ-GTE? 8)

How does it feel power wise now that you've got less drivetrain loss? Is the butt-dyno pleased? :D
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Just out of curiousity how come you decided to lose the 4WD? Seems weird to get rid of that feature as it's an uncommon model..

Doesnt feel any more powerful - but its completely different to drive. It has great low town torque - and it now feels like you reach 3000rpm or so and are expecting a turbo to start kicking in, but it just isnt there - so its now a tad "lacking" if ya get my drift. When it was auto this wasnt a problem - ya just cruised around without caring about gears - but now - now it feels like it needs forced induction.

I have a manifold here (as ya do when you import performance car parts LOL) - so may end up turbo charging it as the stock 2JZGE can candle an easy 400+hp on stock internals with a turbo bolted onto it. Electronics is going to be the issue - these cars seem to have EVERYTHING computer controlled! Few other PITA things too - ie its a dead head fuel system with no return. I gather pressure is regulated by the pump itself, which is of course computer controlled LOL.

Would have loved to keep it - and may still look at trying to fabricate a solution - but there were just no 4wd manual boxes that were going to work. You will note its on the opposite side to all the common boxes like hiluxes etc etc.

Is it just me or does it look like the front drive shafts are still there? can't quite tell. or is it just the old CV cups?

Yes - they are still in place. The drive shaft runs right through the sump - was easier just to detach and let free-wheel.

Hilux/Surf Boxes come in both configurations. Find the right one and you could have full time 4WD and the option to lock the centre diff.

sweet good work

we modifed fuel tank to solve the problem of no return line,
and rewired the intank pump to be on ignition swicth, that supplys the bosch 044's thru the surge tank and returning thru fuel reg,

guage wise the ecu's are a big issue, adam still has issues with the guages,
now has tach working but reading 1/3 higher
speedo works sweet, must get its reading from the abs circuit
temp guage works,
fuel level doesnt neither does oil pressure

some pretty intensive circuitry and ecu setup
all sensor wiring goes to 1 ecu, then is sent to another before going to the dash

Yeah - Brendan said that pretty much EVERYTHING is run through the computer circuitry. We made up a new speed sensor mount and toothed cog so we could retain the factory speed sensor. I still have several error codes in the ECU incl 4WD and Traction control ones - as a result the CEL and 4WD lights are always on and i no longer have traction control. I want to try and find out what types of signals the factory auto sensors would have generated and then replicate them somehow. Theres at least 3 or 4 un-plugged connectors hangin loose now.

Also im going to need to think carefully about an ECU, as apparently the stock computers dont like sharing signals either. If i can work out which sensors it doesnt like sharing (i think water temp is one of them?) then i can look into interceptor / piggy back / add-on type computers like MAPECU2 of course (being a dealer) or even HKS F-CON.

check out http://www.bahamutcars.com/workshop/IS_98-05/ for all the wiring stuff and how everything is connected via ecu's.. plus its a complete online manual, so might help you out with sorting out other issues (or just remove the bulbs from the dash)
