Transporting a sh*tload of stuff from Palmy to Auckland

Postby xsspeed » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:25 am

Hey team

I am in a predicament, been gifted all this gear from the mrs' uncle.

Problem is its in 3 shipping containers and a shed on one property, and various other stuff scattered on other properties.

The plan at this stage is to scope it all out over labour weekend, and maybe bring back one of the cars on a trailer.

1) Any idea what company I should be talking to regarding shipping the containers up to auckland? And any idea on how much I would be looking at?

2) With car trailers is there any way to say hire one in palmy and drop it off some where in auckland (Say at the same franchise)?
Dont really wanna travel the whole way down with an empty car transporter on the back.

Cheers
Steve

Hirepool let you hire 1 place and drop another, but must be same region, costs more tho.
Containers I'm unsure but I shifted 1 from Aucks to Tauranga and was 700 but that was a while ago and it was loaded on. If you need a self loader costs more

Cheers, yeah would need a self loader, I dropped a few emails off to some shipping companies.

Will see what they come back with in terms of prices.

Don't spose anyone is in the industry?

Otherwise might need to round up some of my mates and hire some trucks...mean convoy!

I drive a 40 footer around, out of chch... my bet would be it will be cheaper for you to hire a couple trucks and get some mates, than trying to have the 2 containers shifted.

Youll be charged for the drivers time, the mileage on the truck, the weight of the load etc.... its not a cheap exercise.

Yeah figured that might be the case.

Cheers for the advice dude.

I have had a couple of companies tell me the won't do it (no reasoning though, guessing they only do contract stuff) but still to hit up a family friend who is a truckie so will see what he has to say about it.

Yeah, these days "most" freight companies wont deal with joe public, only account holders.

If you know someone in the biz, you could probably get around that though.

Edit: who did you try?

Try people that specialize in bulk stuff..

like NZ Express, Wilsons Bulk Transport, Agility Logistics etc...

Got a quote at $1310+ Fuel +GSt from Cubic

Have asked Hookers Pacific- waiting on a Quote

Lawsons Transport won't do it

Will check out those other companies also.

Don't spose any one knows what I could get by selling 1 or 2 of the containers once I get to Auckland? Was thinking that might offset the price a bit.

Got Quoted 1200 + GST per container from Hookers Pacific

best price so far

Found out that 20' Containers retail for around 2 - 3k depending on condition. So could make my money back in the long run.

the plan is formulating...

Checked on trademe most there are still arounf the 2k mark, depending on condition, but most would only be suitable for use as storage or conversion to workshop/site office

Just out of curiosity:

What sort of car stuff is it? And where on earth are you going to put 3+ shipping containers of stuff? It won't fit around the corolla in your shed!

Hope so! Problem it won't be instant so I'll be taking a bit of a hit to the savings moving them up. Whats the going rate for kidneys?

Mate there's plenty of room!

nah will be going out to my mates farm so long as we can get trucks to place where he has a spare barn for me.

There's a heap of farm gear etc, but also a 1978 Holden Premier and a 197x Landrover SWB :D with spares for africa

Heaps of tools and as well, MIG welder, oxy-acetylene plant etc etc

Hoping most of it is all in sweet condition, the uncle was a bit of a neat freak in that everything is labelled, anything steel has been oiled etc

so fingers crossed I haven't been gifted a pile of ferrous oxide instead!!
