N/A to Turbo kit for JZA80 supra

Postby Snaps » Mon Oct 13, 2008 6:49 pm

Hi, can anyone point me to a kit that someone sells, that includes everything needed to convert an N/A supra to Turbo, I couldn't find any on the Forty One or Driven Performance websites.

I'm basically trying to find out the price, as I'm deciding between keeping my N/A, and converting it to Turbo, or selling it all out to get one that's already Turbo.
Cheers,
Brandon

I would guess it would be much cheaper to sell it and buy a turbo model. Or perhaps a complete motor swap to the turbo setup?

There are a few places and NA-T guys in Aus but I reckon sell the NA and use the GTE motor as a starter and go from there.Basically you can go anywhere with it once you have the TT.

I suppose I should explain it a bit more, there's a supra on trademe, $26000, Super red MKIV, TT RZ.

My supra is worth about $7000, for a full re-spray of Super Red MKIV (colour I want) it will cost about $3000-$4000 (including getting all the dents, rust removed etc.), I'm hoping a Turbo kit will cost anything less than $6000, that takes total price to ~ $16000 (at most), meaning it'll be a lot cheaper than getting one of the one's on trademe.

Add to that the price for the TT valve covers, an intercooler and and the TT spark plug cover.

The cheapest already-TT on there is about $18,000, but it's white, so a re-spray of SRMKIV would take it up to ~$21,000, the rest of the red one's are N/A.

How much does a 2JZGTE cost? Wouldnt have thought you'd be looking at more than 6k?

^^^ I really have no Idea, but I want to to spend LESS than $6000, because I've also got really no idea how much a N/A to Turbo kit would cost, I'm pretty sure a GTE engine would cost more than that.

Edit: misunderstood you, yea, I really have no idea how much a GTE costs, but I want to compare the two anyway, I think it'll cost more than $6000 but I'm not sure

I think $6000 is dreaming unless you're doing the work yourself.

Sell it and buy the factory turbo one, you'll know its reliable and not modified.

you can get a complete 2jzgte and Getrag V130 6 speed with pedals etc for 3-3.5k if you look hard and dont $&#$% about when you see it. (personal experience. Falsgrave auto spares in chch)

but the general rule is 2jzgte 2-3k and same for box i would think.

i think the think mucking you round is it HAS to be red. Like you said easy to find a TT manual but expensive in red.

DOES RED REALLY MATTER!!!

i would sell your 1 and try find a non turb manual and then buy the motor

there was a TT auto on TM the other day for a shave under 10K, like about 9700 or 9800.

If you are keen enough to spend around $20 K on a car, buy a 6 speed SZ-R and turbo that. That way you have the best of both worlds. can get SZ-R's on TM for around $13K

If you can't do the conversion work yourself don't go there go buy a twin turbo. Also look at a TT 95 onwards as thats when they had the big brakes in them.People make the GE to GTE conversion sound easy but you'll be also looking at doing a TT clutch as well as the NA one won't last long so there's another $1000 right there.I no a guy here in WGTN who has done the GE to GTE conversion twice and trust me there is a boat load of work and I think the cheapest he did it was between 7-8 K which includes motor,TT clutch and associated labour costs it really is alot of work.

Supra's seem to be pretty sale proof at the moment so I mean I reckon you could p/up a 6-spd for about 22-23 K cash that is.

remember resale as well....resale on a n/a converted to turbo would be really bad....not many people want to touch a modified car because there is a large difference between a conversion that has been done right, and one that hasn't....and often it is hard to tell which is which. A standard TT will hold its value a heap better- The buyer knows what they are getting.

To the person asking about the red, yes, if anything that's the most important part, I'm going for looks rather than all-out performance.

I figured if I was going to sell mine rather than re-painting, I may as well get a TT at the same time, so I'm tring to figure out if it's going to be cheaper converting mine to turbo and painting it red rather than buying an already-TT red one.

I probably wouldn't be able to do a complete engine swap, but I do know the GTE engine has benefits (other than being turbo) compared to the GE; block (was it head?), injectors etc. and the bigger brake's.

The other option is to get a TT of another colour (I knew about that $9,900 TT on Trademe, tried to jump on it but my parents wouldn't lend me that much) and get it re-painted red.

Also if I kept my one and done the conversion etc. I probably wouldn't be selling it any time soon, so the re-sale value doesn't really matter as much to me.

You should bring your current supra to the autocross and see how well you do, and decide if you really need the 2JZ-GTE or not.

haha, yea, I'm waiting for my mum to give me an answer for the whole megameet, I'm not driving 1 + 1/2 hours everyday to come to the whole meet if I can't get my mum to come and pay for accomodation, I will be coming to the autocross either way though, I suppose I don't really neeed the GTE, as my supra is my DD, and it's more than powerful enough for a 16 y/o.

not really looking at them, just getting information, this is my second car and got it for $6300 off trademe (got it with help from my dad, paying him back for it), so didn't really go all out with it.

Paint your one red, then spend a year or two saving to do the GTE conversion properly.

otomoto.com.au has turbo conversion kits.
but 220hp is plenty for a 16 yearold.
what these people above have said about resale value is very true.
