brake pad recommendations (hilux calipers)

I need some better pads for my front hilux calipers on the rolla. I assume the ones on there are the moment are standard ones, but the back is wanting to lock up before the front.

the calipers i'm using are off a 79 - 88 4WD Hilux and have the staggered piston size.

are there any good brands to go for, anything to avoid etc etc?

I could not find any decent uprated pads designed specifically for the hilux caliper... but...

endless CCX pads designed for a s4 rx7 will fit the old style hilux 4 pots... , they needed a small amout of modification to fit ie: bench grinder, i am out of the country so can't help with a part number sorry. these are not cheap but work REALLY well. Mintex or ebc would probably be cheaper alternatives also to fit the series 4 rx7.

If you were using the bigger hilux newer calipers with the fins on them you need a pad from a wrx 4 pot (around 99 model I believe).

Have a look at my starlet in the project section there is a pic of the brakes to see if they are the same type of caliper.

yeah im using the same calipers as what you've got.
I did have the newer calipers with the fins but they crapped out so got another set of "hilux calipers" off trademe and they turned out to be the older style.

would you have access to model numbers when you're back in the country? any more info you can send would be a huge help!

are the pads off any s4 rx7, or only specific years?

i'm pretty sure i still have the box for the pads in my garage but that won't help you for about a month...
i'm not too sure on wether there is any differences in the years of s4 rx7's sorry. any decent brake shop should be able to help you out with that info...

i got mine through eugene at tradeparts, wairau road in glenfield. calling him may solve your issues.. (so long as you get him on a good day)

Depending on how much you want to spend Race Brakes can make pads for anything.

Ship them your old pads and they will strip any remaining material and use the back plates as the basis of new pads.

what are you using the car for?

if its a road car, or even just the odd track day id go with stock toyota pads

street car but will take it down the strip and the track when i get the chance.

it probably has stock toyota pads on there at the moment, but no idea how old/what cond they are. I did give them a roughen up with some sand paper but im sure there would be something better around.

yes there will be something better, at greater cost.
but for your use stock ones more than ok
think how heavy a hilux is compared to your corolla.
if you can find a friendly toyota parts department go look at all the pads of the right shape (theres often 4-5 compounds of the same shape) and choose the ones with the highest metal content. you can clearly see it in the pads.
