I guess about the stage where you're trying to play silly buggers with the identity of the vehicle to get an illegal / stolen / uncompliable car on the road.

What would really suck is when you come to selling it, do you tell the buyer? If I bought a car that has had something like that done I'd be pretty pissed and most people would probably try taking legal action against the seller.

Plus if it was me I'd be constantly worried that any money I pour into the car would be a waste because someone (mechanic, insurance assessor, etc) is going to notice and make the car worthless.... wouldn't that suck?

So why do you need to do you need to do it this way? I am still lost as to your reasons!

Unless there is something you think it won't pass on in which case you are breaking the law anyway.

What he said?

If it is worth as much to you as you say then do it the right way and get the car a new vin then it is as legal as you get.

interesting discussion, but just to clarify, the car in question should go through a re-vin no hassles at all.

its just the fact it needs to be revinned in the first place which is the hassle, and the cost. the car is still the same as it was when the rego lapsed.
nothing dodgy or suspicious about it, i just thought there might be an easier way without being dodgy. obviously not though, so it will be getting vinned properly...
