Hey

I have a 1981 toyota starlet hatch kp60 with 2k engine. Am keen as to upgrade as both engine and gearbox are very tired. Im wanting a bigger engine and new 5-speed box that will prety much fit straight in without to much hassel. Any info will be muh appreciated

Find a 4K or 5K with box to suit. The KE20 and Starlet boxes should fit in fine, might find the shifters are in a slightly different spot in the KE30 onwards ones.

Engines should bolt straight in no worries at all

A 5K will need the sump swapped, otherwise bolt in easy as. Later Corolla boxes will need you to chop the hole in the trans tunnel slightly longer to fit the shifter.

How easy would a 4A-GE bolt in?

in a case like this, i would say that if you have to ask.... hard

its been done many many times
and its certainly not the hardest thing out there
but you will need to modify a few things
and some some decent wiring and fuel system mods

If it's 5 speed then it has one already.

If it's 4 speed, then yes, very easily.

Yes provided the car is already manual and you're using a Starlet K50, otherwise theres a bit of fiddling required.

I've done that exact conversion.

If you've got a 5-speed out of a KP then its' easy as.

Everything bolts up to what you've got, although my 4k dizzy was electronic and not working so I just swapped in the 2k dizzy and it ran mint. Intake and exhaust manifolds bolt up no worries, as do the engine mounts. I had to use my 2k fuel pump in the 4k as the one that it came with was shagged.

The 5speed gearboxes out of the DXs are slightly longer, they bolt up to the engine and mounts fine, but the shifter is further back so you've got to grind a little bit of the trans tunnel away to get it to fit nicely. No biggie.

Having a 4k makes a huge difference.. best $80 I ever spent, lol!

4AGE.. big, difficult and considerably pricey job, parts are getting very hard to come by now. You need to wire up the car to suit injection, new fuel lines, mod engine mounts, so already a much harder job than a 4K. And its' definitely a stick it in the garage for weeks job, whereas you can easily do the 4k swap in an afternoon.

Ive heard its possible to swap tail housings between starlet and corolla k gearboxs, saves cutting a hole in the tunnel.

Thanks, didn't know what the engines were called so my searches weren't too successful, mostly coming up with 4A-GE conversions
