2ZZGE Engine Backfire Sometimes

Postby Timoz » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:08 pm

Well I've got a Toyota Allex 6 speed manual with 2ZZGE engine got Blitz cotton type pod filter and Blitz muffler.

The problem is sometimes it make a pop in the exhaust when i change gear or when i'm going downhill i let my foot off the accelerator for a while and press the accelerator again it will make a pop in the exhaust again, it would do it sometimes.

Any one know why it does it as it's becoming a bit annoying.

Yeah, I get the same thing, i think it's pretty normal however I remember reading a post not too long ago.. was trying to dig it up but couldn't find it where a guy took his Air Flow Meter (or similar out) apparently it was clogged.. which also causes bad fuel economy...

My question is: Does anyone know how to get the AFM or whatever we have in the 2ZZ GE out to clean it and how would one clean it after?

Cheers!

Dunno why it does it, but mine used to do it as well, mostly just as you drop the throttle off, and usually around the change in lift point, so maybe it runs a bit richer at that point, and if you back off, the gas has to light somewhere, and the exhaust is where it is when it lights.

dont most engines with poddys and aftermarket exhausts do it on trailing throttle? being less baffled etc more free flow, you hear whats going on a lot more?

I cleaned my AFM not long ago, and i get 570-600km out of a tank of 50L when driving half on motorway and other on city driving (going to work). Worst so far is 520km as i think it's due to lots of cold starts and just driving in the city with lots of stops and starts.

So it seems to be a normal thing for the 2ZZGE to have this kinda tings once the intake and exhaust is moded.

Totally normal for cars with exhausts, only cause its running rich when you let your foot off for a split second.

You can make it keep backfiring too, when you hear it pop, keep tapping the gas gently ;)

the AFM is located on the air box just after the where the joint to the intake hose is made. just unplug the cable that is connected to the AFM and undo the two screws which holds the AFM in place, take it out and use a cotton buds (Thats me) to clean it, but becareful not to damage it or crack the glass otherwise it'll cost $290 buck to get it replaced.
