ae101 trouble; stumped!

Postby FULLOC » Tue Nov 04, 2008 4:22 pm

hey was driving home today and the levin all of a sudden crapped out, kept running but engine light on fulltime and wont idle unless held at decent rpm and is running like it in limp mode or something

i got home, some 80km later at 60kph and tried to run the diagnostics but it wont give me any codes. im sure im doin it correctly, e1 to te1, even tried e1 to te2.

basically runs ok, no noises or knocks or anything but is lightly blowin some black fumes (runnin rich mayb?), doesnt like driving over 3000rpm, even thats a struggle but will rev to redline ok jus sounds a bit off.

i unplugged knock sensor but no change
have disconnected battery
and ecu fuses
and efi fuse which is supposed to reset codes.

has good spark and too much fuel if anything so in think its in limp mode or somthing

any gurus out there?? please the missus is drivin me f-n crazy

yep if its not giving fault codes the ecu is poked!, I recently had the same symptoms you had, hard starting, idle but wont rev, really rich!.

the check lamp was on but when i bridged it wouldnt flash, put a new ecu in and check lamp out, back to normal :)

figured it was somethin like that, jus been searchin on the net. limp mode drops timing right back so would explain why it feels like the timings out.

ecu behind the glovebox like usual?found the heater and shit but havent ripped anythin apart yet.
will get onto it tomorrow :D

if anyone in hamilton or nearby has an ecu i can try it would be appreciated.

ECU is probably on top of the tunnel under the heater. Access from drivers side I think....

Pulled ecu out and inspected it. cant see a single thing out of place and all looks very clean and non-leaky.

Will try buy a new ecu 2moro, u sure if i cant get codes it is the ecu??
cheers

just replace the capacitors then you will know if its the ecu or not... its cheap todo... buying another ecu may have the same issue... over half the 20v ecus iv looked at have been leaky... or non leaky but problem solved when caps replaced

thats what our sparky said when I couldnt get codes out, i had brought car with stuffed motor put another motor in, got it running check lamp was on and ran like a bag of sh*t, the air temp sensor was missing so thought it was that but he said doesnt normally blip check lamp with toyotas.

since i couldnt get codes out i was pretty much stuffed as to what was up, ecu gives out the codes anyway so plugged in another map 4agze ecu and it was sweet.

yea he reckons capacitors were faulty aswell!

could be your VVT, tlked to a guy at work, if its jammed it will come up with the light, MEGA retard your timing, and probably not log a code. so if the next ECU doesnt help you, id be looking there. i drove a ae101 witht he exact same symptoms as your sayying and when i asked about it it iwas suggested that it was a vvt fault
