Tubing cars...

Postby Infinite » Wed Nov 05, 2008 10:03 pm

Ok so im wanting to tub the rear end of the kp61... basicly it will have a cage to the floor behind the seats then i want to cut out the wheel arches and floor and run 2x box section chassi rails to attact the evo subframe to... how do u go about joining the box section rails back into the car?

I'm not trying to seem anti this idea, but it honestly seems like pushing shit up hill. I understand the logic behind it, but surely there is an easier way to get a rear end that will handle the evo jandal than swapping in the actual subframe, which will be a mission of epic proportions.

Cant you just use a modified Hilux diff? You can use an LSD centre from an A70 supra and it will certainly be up to the task.

I've just read your new project thread, I see what you want to do now, and I think it's going to be a huge amount of work. If you can pull it off I guess it would be pretty sweet, but you're basically going to need to tube frame the entire car. I wouldn't bother trying to use the actual subframes for anything other than a reference, just build an entire tube chassis and mount the arms straight onto it, like on Aarons Lotus Seven replica. Then cut the floor right out of your starlet and drape the body over the new frame and attach it basically the same way you'd weld a roll cage into an existing car.

but that makes it non road legal tho? as u have to retain the front chassi rails?. My basic idea is to run box section to the front chassi rails as like the RIPS datsun ute. then just a flat sheet metal floor with a box tunnel for drive shafts.

best bet is go and find yourself a certifier and talk the idea thru with them,
they will soon tell you what you need to know and what you cant do,

i agreee with postfach you would be better ditching the original subframes and just using what you have to, making arms etc

for my current project im building a chassis from scratch, im lucky with it being a ute the cab comes off, but there is no way im using the original subframes from any of the components i intend to run

Wrong!

According to the LVVTA: "When the modified vehicle contains less than 40% of the original bodywork surface area and less than 40% of the chassis rails and 50% of the crossmembers, or 40% of a spaceframe or floorpan. For example, a fibreglass bodied car on a Triumph Herald chassis is no longer a Triumph Herald but is a scratch-built car."

That means if you go whole hog and build a full tube chassis, and are not using any original subframes then unless the standard of work is sub par, you can get it certed as a scratch built car. In fact even less modification is required than that to qualify as a scratch built car (as quoted above).

Not a hot rod. A scratch built.
Constructors Car Club is the biggest scratch built car club in the country.

Unfortunately there is no forum or anything as they are mostly older guys who have been into cars forever.
