Postby AE86less » Thu Nov 06, 2008 9:05 am

I've just bought a '95 BZG Levin (114 000kms, manual, mint body)

Just wondering what you would say it was worth? I think I got it cheaper than the usual replacement cost would be..

About $4k to $5k *if* the insurance company is going to pay out market rate

or

About $6k *if* the insurance company will pay out an agreed figure, without trying to rape you.

So, probably best to triple check everything with the insurance company first. No point in paying a premium on a $7k car, if they fully intend to pay you out $3k if it gets written off.

Yeah, but insurance companies have their own values, which can be scary.

To give you an idea of their values, they devalued my 1999 Corolla station wagon to *half* the price of the ones for sale on trademe when the car came up for insurance renewal.

I got on the phone to them, and asked them to find me another Rolla wagon for the price they had chosen. They said I needed to get two valuations before they would reconsider.

So I told them to stick their insurance company up their bums 8)

To give you an idea of the value, this was three years ago, and they decided that a 1999 Corolla wagon was a $3500 car at that stage. They were a $6k car at the absolute cheapest private sale back then, and $10k + on a car yard. So, the insurance company "value" was seriously bizarre.

If I went to a few dealers and got valuation and took those to them might I get agreed value?

The BZGs on TM at about 5 grand have at least 50 000 more kms and a mod list that reads like this:

POD filter
Monsta Tacho (multi colour!)
Big exhaust
17" Chromes
Chrome shift knob

1GGZE GX81

Did this with the Corolla. Ended up insuring it $3000 more than when i first got it 8)

only thing is, most places will charge to do a valuation as your insurance company has to see the valuation which means the dealers have to write one out

Check your fine print though :) Just in case. Also bear in mind the higher the value, the higher your premium, so if you consider that you're a low theft / crash risk you might be better accepting a lower value and premium.
