Well if Nissan say they have photo and video evidence and the tyres they used for the lap well to me unless proven otherwise it sounds pretty legitimate to me.

They said themselves that was never part of the intention, but it clearly shows it can exchange blows with Euro cars worth twice as much or more while being clearly Japanese and its own thing as opposed to say Toyota's effort with the I wanna be a ferrari Mid-Rear thing they did.

But yeah, the whole idea of the MR2 from day one was to be a 'poor mans sports car', a car that could convey a sporty and fun feel, while being affordable to joe bloggs.

I think it's awesome that one of the Japanese manufacturers has stepped up to the plate like this, and delivered something worthy from the factory, rather than "Yeah it's got 280ps and it'll go faaaaast if you do XYZ" which pretty much encompasses 99% of Jap cars up to that point.

Yeah I know, I liken the MR2 and the new GTRs efforts to each other - basically trying to appeal to people who want a certain class of car but can't justify spending that much.

The GTR will give people who may be able to spend $130000 on a car the ability to get something thats no matter how you look at it, DIFFERENT, and also able to run with the "big boys" in all the bragging rights at the bar aspects.

Anyone see the Top Gear power lap time that the R35 got? Freaking impressive! Especially when considering that, on a nice smooth track, the relative importance of a light weight increase and the relative importance of a sophisticated AWD system diminishes.

Argh! Horrible triple post!

But I look forward to them having the V-Spec GT-R on the track when its released. Sheds 100KG and gains like an extra 40kw. Should produce an interesting time.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

haha yeah sorry about that- It was giving me an error when I tried to post so I tried again a couple of times before actually checking the board.

Cleaned up now.

Be interesting to see how the new Corvette goes around the TG track- It was faster around the Nurburgring I think.

The recent Targa results told a different story for the Nissan off the race track

hmm that site didnt really mean much.....is there a plain english write up?

A GTR in the Tassie Targa took it out on street tyres......but results like this are too dependent on driver skill etc. The Top Gear results should be more consistent (although, to be fair, weather conditions are not taken into account with those)

Problem with the GT-R on road courses is that it doesn't recognise them as a race track, and limits top speed to 180kph

Haha the Datsun thing was just a nudge at what Clarkson always calls them. Seems to be a couple of Nissan fans here. I'm just pointing out that it defies all we can assume about the things that makes cars quick, if a heavier, similarly powered car can beat a car that is heralded by every car journo I've ever read or heard as the unbeaten handling benchmark, round a track in its back yard. Just saying put them next to each other, then see which is actually faster. Is it impressive the GTR is as fast as it undoubtably is, hell yes. Is it the fastest round that track? Well no, now its the Viper ACR aparently. Still rather have the Porsche, I know which one the ladies will prefer.

Additional pulling power is actually a listed option in the Porsche brochure.
