hey all

thinking about organising an event or 2 like 1/4 mile, drifting or tracks etc all using existing public roads. (no tracks here)

no idea where to start, if anyones been involved in this kind of stuff before, perhaps a few pointers etc or a shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

some pics from the 1/4 mile sprints on the weekend.. gissy style.. turnout wasnt the greatest, im sure me and the flatties could do better.

You have to get in touch with your local district council, and apply for a road closure. They will have a price to it, and conditions (meet with all the residents along effected road, etc). We do it all the time for our events in taranaki (no tracks here either)


13.9? Pfff, I do that in my MR2 on our closed road drags on roads just like the one in your picture.

shit apparently that ferrari is 450~kw too!! said he was hitting 205-210kms over the 1/4 mile trap. shows that you dont need a 6L V8 to pull a half decent time aye.

The council site should have applications for this kind of thing. Normally you will need a traffic control company present but mihgt not need to depending on what you submit. Talk to a local traffic control company and see what they think. They will know whats what and who to talk to. Most roads out them ways are Low volume / Level 1 and should only need STMS Level 1 (i am ;))

All Roading Authorities (Councils) in NZ refer to Transit's COPTTM (Code of practice for temporary traffic management) for how to run a closure. have a look at http://www.transit.govt.nz/technical/copttm.jsp

Start be getting in touch with your nearest MNZ affiliated car club, who would be Gisborne Car Club. Car clubs have enough troubles getting road closures these days, its costs, you need to have all sorts of insurance, STMP's, signage, advertising (in the papers etc) its a fairly healthy can of worms if you dont know what you're doing

as mentioned, talk to local car club and see if they can help.

obtaining the necessary clearances as a member of the public for a motorsport-type event on closed public roads would be full of pitfalls, mainly lack of affiliation to MSNZ and lack of $10mil public liability that automatically included in a MSNZ permitted event.

should the brown stuff fly at a non-permitted event, be prepared to meet bubba, as a normal civil lawyer won't be much use to defend you like the ones that MSNZ have.

Get in touch with your local car club dude Im not sure how or rock down to Engine Rebuilders Gisborne 277 Palmerston Rd and ask for Matt and tell him Dave from welly told you to talk to him cause him and his wife and entire family are very very active in the Gisborne car club

I've heard the Gisborne car Club organise this event where abouts do they hold it ????

I would say there would be alot of red tape to get through to hold this event.

I used to go to the closed road sprints the HSV club here in WGTN used to organise over at the St.Francis Line in Carterton and the organiser told me there is quite alot to organise and red tape to go through but its a boat-load of fun though.

Yeah, I know andy and matt who organise it, they're all good, may end up talking to them.

they use a few different roads on the outskirts of gissy, 5/10 min drive from town kind of thing.

their events are alright, but there is so much more potential.

perhaps the key here is contacts?

lol, turnout was so dull that the cops didnt even show up to make money off people speeding to and fro the event. :-S

Paul, there is an awful lot involved in running any kind of motorsport event that may not be immediately apparent.
I applaud you for wanting to have a crack at it. The sport needs more, particularly younger, people willing to do so.
However the fish hooks are big and the repercussions for mistakes are severe.

The last thing that any branch of motorsport needs is a backlash from authorities due to the actions of new, inexperienced event organisers.

Gisborne Car Club is quite a small club but they are your best bet in terms of getting anything up & running. They have a good history of well run & popular events, and I would imagine, a very good rapport with the Councils.

Don't be fooled into believing that poor attendances at club events are indicative of poor organisation. Low turnouts are common country wide at the moment.

My advice is to get alongside them and share your ideas (this is different from telling them you can do it bigger and better). If they see merit they'll surely invite you along to discuss them further. If they highlight potential issues, take heed. They'll know what they're talking about.
