I always thought Toyotas ran the tacho direct off the ignitor (IG in the check block)?

With Autronic ECU's you need a 1000 ohm resistor between the ignitor and ECU to allow the signal to be read if that helps?

Earlier 3S-GTE engines (and most other Toyotas) used a 20v signal from the ignitor, which makes getting the tacho working with an aftermarket ECU a PITA. However this changed with the ST215 and the (12v) signal comes direct from the ECU. This means the signal will not run an aftermarket (coil negative) or earlier Toyota tacho.

Not right now, my manual is in transit from Australia and won't be in my possesion for another 3-4 weeks.

There is another trick you can use that might get a suitable signal for a coil -ve tacho.

Simply piggy-back a non-supressed relay to the ECU's Tacho output. The back voltage spike created by the collapse of the magnetic field from the relay coil when it's switched off may be enough to drive the tacho. Other than that you're stuck with something like a MSD Tach adapter

Code: Select all
ECU ------>Tacho

       V
      Relay

       V
