Anyone in AKL with Air/Fuel Meter that i can borrow?

Postby MrOizo » Tue Dec 02, 2008 11:45 pm

As per the topic.

Does anyone have a AF meter that i could borrow before a go for cert. New regulations say that AF must be within certain range.

Would like to know before hand :)

Also any tips on keeping it within range? Hope i dont need the exhaust re-done with a CAT in it :o

Cheers.

Yip thats the one - Engine swaps.

From August 2008 all swaps need to have AF tested :?

I read all thru the testing requirements for that yesterday, pretty easy to pass, provided the vehicle has had a good street driven tune, it'll pass with flying colours

Oh, it also said that engine swaps after May 2008 must comply with these rules. What constitutes a engine swap?

I did mine around this time and if i can prove i put mine in before the cut off date could i get away with it? :)

Taken from: http://www.lvvta.org.nz/stdExhaustGasEmissions.pdf

Engine conversion means, within the context of this standard, the substitution of a motor vehicle’s factory-fitted engine with another engine of a different type, usually carried out for reasons of enhanced performance or improved fuel economy, in most cases involving the retro-fitment of a later-model engine.

it seems a bit grey around the "undergone an engine conversion after 1 May 2008" statement. would be interested to know their interpretation.

Does it mean that i dont have to comply if i undertook my engine conversion in 2006 but havent had a certification check till december 2008? or would it be because i am trying to certify post 1 May 2008, then it must comply?

(not that i really care, because mine complys to that standard anyway)

Yeah one or two guys have gotten through without the test, on account of "Engine was in before march" or whatever.

Mmm how does it work with bottom end swaps and same series engine swaps?

Who's to know if I have a 3L bottom end on my 1JZ??

Engine numbers should be matching from the firewall plate to the engine shouldn't they?

any near stock engine with standard ecu will fly through.

its a pretty easy test to pass unless your tune is shit. done a quick rough tune on a mates car and it passed (link ecu)

Haha, only just though! If the engine is an increase in CC its seen as a transplant and therefore needs to be tested (quoted from certifier), and also costs extra since they have to do the AFR test. They take readings at different load conditions but theyre not too rigid (take a look at the LVV site for exact ranges). If you had a standard block longer stroke engine then yes you could prob get away with it, but for an extra $50 and the piece of mind of not getting done for manslaughter down the line when you crash into someone, I reckon its worth it to just take the test. Sounds extreme/paranoid but if youre going for cert anyway, might as well be fully legit...

Bottom line is AFR is a stupid emmision test anyway, they should be targeting specific compounds but AFR is easy and accessible. Get those engine conversions finished and certed cause retro fitment of cats to all vehicles fitted with post '85 engines (jap) is mandatory post 1 May 2010...

Oh come on, now you're just being silly.

No one's ever gonna get done for manslaughter (or not) based solely on 500cc one way or another.

i think hes meaning more the engine type - not many manufacturers list complete engine number on the build plate (in fact none that i can think of)

for example, firewall says 3AU but engine says 4AGE

Unlikely, but in a worst case scenario being found to have an illegal 'modified' car when someone is dead, in conjunction with a bunch of cops who are looking for a reason to nail you = not beyond the realms of possibility.

Even a 1500cc crap box car can go 180kph, It'd be a pretty thinly stretched argument to say that a slightly larger engine was the main contributing factor in a crash, given that it's responsible use of the right foot which governs how fast pretty much any vehicle is travelling at.

Although I guess that's not to say that some police officer/lawyer/judge/whoever might try it on though, so I see your point.
