Gauges

Postby solitaire » Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:13 pm

Hiya,

Keen to hear about everyones experiences with gauges.

My wife has a history of not noticing oil lights and temperature lights.

I was looking at getting a couple of prosport gauges with warning and peak. This basically flashes and makes and iritating noise until the sensor readings fall back within a pre-defined threshold.

Ive heard that the prosport gauges break frequently. The only good brands i have heard about are defi... $$$$$$$

does anyone have any gauges that feature a visible and audible warning? What has your experience been with these? Any brands you recomend?

A cutoff is not an option for safety reasons, i want my wife to decide when to turn of the engine when the car is in trouble, but i want her life to be unpleasant until she does...

hope i dont sound too evil here

how about wiring the factory lights to turn on some kind of buzzer when they turn on, shouldn't be too hard, just run a relay in parallel to the light(s) you deem important that switches the buzzer on.

I was under the impression that by the time the factory oil light has come on you are already rooted?

You can tamper with factory lights, atleast with my RX7 I have, factory water temp light was changed to come on earlier.

And I stole them (legitly) out of a RX8 dad imported, all sensors etc are with it.. They were working on RX8, never been put in another car, just sittin in a bag.
Make a offer by PM if you want..

oil light is just for oil pressure for a factory light, so if you lost pressure, then chances are yes you rooted heh :P

Correct for the most part. Once the factory oil light is on your level / pressure has dropped significantly! If pushing hard at the time it would result in damage however if only putting around town it will be ok.

I recommend AutoMeter. Give Brian from Autopia a ring for pricing.http://www.autopia.co.nz

if they are coming ... wouldnt that mean there is a problem ?

which would be better of getting sorted out rather than putting a gauge in ?

or if its modified and if she is driving the car that hard surely she should be smart enough to look at the gauges ?
Nothing to see here ...

Hey solitaire,

I’ve got the prosport oil/water temp and oil pressure gauges in my MR2 race car. Yep, they certainly get your attention when they start flashing/beeping. I’m always setting off my oil temp gauge when racing.
The two temp gauges I’ve not had a problem with, but I seem to be constantly having trouble with the oil pressure gauge (probably half my fault).
Its also annoying that they only do the temp gauges in Fahrenheit.
I’m up in Auckland (pukekohe) on the weekend of 31st Jan/1st Feb. practicing on the Saturday, and racing on the Sunday for SS2000. Feel free to head down and check the car, and it’s installs out. I might even have some free entry tickets floating around (but its only $5 to get in anyway).

my girlfriend last corolla had the light come on once a fortnight i'd put more oil in it and it was sweet again. Some times she'd run around with the light on for a couple of days... I'd always flip out when she'd remember to ask me to put more oil in it.. 8O

Hmmmm seems to be a theme here.
For cheap and easy I would wire the factory warning lights to a buzzer. Or perhaps to give her small electric shocks.

I'd be more inclined to replace the factory switch with something that turns on at a higher pressure...most factory ones switch between 3 and 7psi...

I have seen a car with the oil light wired in as a kill switch and a bypass button to get it started, no oil pressure and the car turns off. Mind you thats what it would be anyway, or more like game over.
