LN130 Surf

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:00 pm

Ok as some of you may know i have been looking at either selling the caldina and purchasing a tow vehicle, or just purchasing a tow vehicle to compliment my current fleet!

I just drove past an 1991 LN130W Surf which had For Sale $1000 written on the window, so i stopped to check it out.
Turns out the owner was in his driveway so i had a quick chat to him

quick details from the brief look in the fading light:
reddy/maroony average paint, 1991, 220,00kms, turbo diesel, RUC's have about 500kms left on them, spare tyre bald, other 4 look about half tread, 2L-TE 2.4L motor, 4x4 manual, low ratio, rego on hold, wof expires this month, $1000 as is where is, towbar, carjam seems to stack up ok KMs wise etc and that it needs motor work done. interior was reasonable for age, had a parcel tray in the back, no stereo

he said that the fuel pump was buggered
and that something about seals and been fixed as was upside down
and that one of his mates had a later model one that had been rolled that he was going to buy for $500, do a motor swap and carry on, but he decided that it was a lemon and he was over it (has only driven it a couple of times before the engine check light came on hence engine troubles)

i guess what i am asking is would this be a good buy, either to fix the motor, or change the motor out completely and then have a reasonable tow vehicle???
any ideas on motor rebuild or replacement costs?
are these motors/surfs any good?
anything to look out for?

its the wide body style one which is the one i like, includes nudge bar and running boards (nudge bar is a wee bit average/rusty)

from what i wrote down, this seems to be the model:
http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/toyot ... 91_8/7206/
however im sure it was an SSR-G, not an SSR-X (but hey its off the chassis code)

this is a pic i found via auto.vl.ru (cant remember if the bullbar is like that tho)

actually im sure the front was more like this one:

71kW, 240Nm Torque

how do i know if its got an LSD?
it didnt have a sunroof :(
and im pretty sure it just had plain windows, non tinted etc

2LT's eat heads when unmaintained, maybe swap it out for a 5L perhaps? Or a 1KZTE
Actually no, you suck at modifying vehicles, so just walk away and find one that doesnt need work :P

As above. If the engine needs work its usually a head on those. There is a reason the turbo ones are cheap.

If you wanna do a heap of work then go for it (assuming it needs a heap of work) or just find one thats not turbo. They're getting a lot cheaper

as above! :P

towing (actually just driving) with a 2lte is torture....
minimum 1kz is needed

if its the head then it will cost you about 100%-150% of the buy price to sort
if its the pump, maybe a little less. then you will still need to do the head.

if however you find one with good mechanicals and a rooted body, i know of someone who just bought an engineless V6 one with mint body, they only want the chassis from it

but that means work.... and brad is right :P

what are the 5L and 1KZTE motors?

any idea what it would cost to either replace or fix up the motor?

Yeaaah you wouldnt really think the 2L-T had a turbo anyway, they are horribly gutless.

2lts are gutless as, would probably be cheaper and much easier to find one with a 1KZ (3l turbo diesel)

5L is a 3L non turbo
1KZ is the 3L turbo

5L is no powerhouse (all torque, no revs) but it will pull all day long quite happily and never break. The 1KZs go a whole heap better. They have their own issues including heads/gaskets but if you look after them then they're fine. Bigger exhausts help

We had a 2001 Hilux (4WD double cab, 5L powered) and it did go well!! Wasnt fast while driving it, but when you hooked up a trailer it still went the same speed!! One day we hired a digger from hirepool, and the guy left the brake on. We only realised when the trailer brakes started smoking!!

2LT's couldn't tow the skin off a rice pudding.

at that price you buy it an repower it with either a 1KZ, big bore and front mount i/c or you repower it either either a 3.4 V6 5VZFE from a mid/late 90's surf/prado or you stick a 2JZGE in it.

fabricating engine mounts or moving the pedestal mounts along the chassis rails
